The More I learn
It seems the more I learn about poker (NLHE) The worse I seem to be doing,
I don't know why this is but before I really knew there was a strategy to the game or pot odds or preflop raising or any of that, I was doing better then I am now. I don't know what exactly I have been doing wrong, maybe I'm playing too tight now but I can't seem to get back on a respectable winning level.. before I was at least breaking even most times and now I just lose... I pick up a few pots and BAM then its all gone. some times it was to bad beats,
(Quad K's cracked) and other times I just shouldnt have made the calls.
I have read several of the books (Advanced no limit, super system and SS2)
and I just seem to be wallowing and my play is not doing so well.. any helpful suggestions? I really enjoy poker and in live games I almost always do well but online I'm getting stomped.

maybe post some hand histories? We're happy to help, but we need to see some examples. Welcome to FTR

I didn't read through all the hands, but regardless - the same thing happened to me. You were just getting lucky before. You were probably playing 75% of your hands and pulling out hands somehow either by catching something or overbetting so people folded. This works short term, but long term you will lose everything. When I first came here and read some articles and posts, I tried them out. I didn't do too well. But as I read more and try new things, I'm gettting better and I know that I was a fish. Now I'm less of a fish, but I'm getting better every day. I still make dumb mistakes, but I realize they are mistakes and learn from them. If you keep reading and applying what you learn, you will be sucessful longterm.
-
I'm no expert but here's where I'd question your play...
Hand 1: Pocket Ts
You just called and let 6 players see the flop. Pocket Pairs, especially Js, Ts and 9s, will never stand on their own against 5 opponents. You have to place a decent pre-flop bet to chase many, or even take it down right then. Or if you just call 'em, play it like Pocket 2s... if you don't catch the trips, they're almost useless. But once 5 people see the flop, you're dead.
Hand 7; Flush Draw
At the turn, I'd question your raise. Calling the .50 may even be marginal since your flush-draw was to the K and not A. PLus you were playing 2, not 1 opponent.
Hand 8; KJo
You had position, a modest pre-flop raise here might have reduced the field of opponents and/or bought you a free-card at the turn with everyone checking to you. At the flop, I don't think I would have folded, with 2 overcards and a gutshot straight draw.
Hand 9; 98o, Small Blind
Personally, I'd have played this in the small blind (but would have folded to any action post-flop, even with middle pair).
Hand 11; Q3o
You're in bad position. I would fold it pre-flop. Your .30 call at the turn against a $1.26 pot with an OS draw, with one overcard, was probably OK... barely, but against 2 opponents, I might have folded here too.
Hand 14; K3o
Big-Little offsuits are just sucker traps to lose with that crappy kicker. Fold it. Notice how you made the first call, then had a raise behind you that forced a second-call. This illustrates how important your position is. And how marginal decisions can make you "leak" money.
-
It takes a while to find your game. Keep playing and try to learn from every hand. Start with preflop play and know why you're getting into a hand - position, cards and the action of the other players; they all matter.
Post flop you'll have to get a feel for how your limit and type game players play and adjust your game. Different limits play differently - more loose for lower (or micro) limits, more standard and agressive play on higher limits. There are different syles of play for loose/weak tables vs agressive/strong tables. The main thing with loose micro tables (I used to play .5/$1 which isn't really micro) is that you have to watch out for drawing hands and be able to spot when the other player hit it.
Poker is learned over thousands of hands of play - regardless of the books. They give you the theory, but you adjust based on the conditions at your table. And you'll find where your style game fits best. I learned playing .5/$1 over a number of years, but found my own playing SnG NL games. There are fewer decisions that are played for more chips. But, I'm not a fan of NL Ring games. And limit to me now is like watching paint dry.
If you're trying to play too sophisticated a game - based on the books - then you might want to simplify. I have a chart I made that tells me what to do in most common situations, and when in doubt I follow the chart. (and I've been playing for years) The key is to play consistently - win or lose. Then you can analyze how that is working over the long term and make adjustments. At micro levels you're playing to build your Game, not really your bankroll.
When I lose a number of tournaments then I look at my notes from each tournament and ask what happened? How did I misplay or was it just bad luck. Consistent bad luck generally means you're playing 2nd best cards, your game is right but you're playing the wrong stakes (I doubt I could win money long term on micro tables because there are too many calling stations who play anything), or you're underbetting and letting people get free or cheap cards when you're ahead.
Play the limits that you can afford, but I'll tell you a story. When I was a teenager I read a book on how to teach my cat to use the toilet. I tried and tried to get the cat to do it, according to the book. And then I realized that THE CAT didn't read the book!!! You may be playing a good game against people who are too stupid to know they're beat, so they keep drawing miracle hands. If they didn't read the book, then they can't be toilet trained.
#1 Keep playing.
#2 Keep playing correctly - like anything good habits pay off long term
#3 Learn from every hand and decide if it was your cards, your betting, your reads/observation, bad beat, etc. and improve over time.
-
Alright. i'll tackle these hands 1 by 1.
Hand 1: RAISE. Tens are not going to hold up in a multiway pot unless you hit a set. Had you raised preflop, you wouldn't have to worry so much about that baby pair on the flop. secondly, bet the flop. Don't wait for the checkraise here, unless you're doing it for information, because the only thing that's gonna call it is a hand that can beat you. I'd lay it down to the re-raise here. The 5 on the river makes it less likely he has that 4th 5... but you don't know that at this point. You're down to two outs, and can be pretty sure you're beat. Raise preflop, and that 5-2 probably lays it down. Probably.
Hand 2 - Nice fold, I guess. Not much to say here.
Hand 3 - Definitely a lay down facing the 3xBB raise. That's a poor bet on his part with 9s UTG, but that's not really your concern until you've got a read on them.
Hand 4. Easy Muck.
Hand 5: Good muck.
Hand 6: They gave you plenty of opportunities to catch a card. Oh well. Nothing you can do.
Hand 7: Don't bluff at these limits. It's not worth it. All in on a Flush draw is burning money. Once he makes it 50 cents, your pot odds are gone. Your K high isn't good. FOLD. FOLD. FOLD.
Hand 8: Pretty good fold. I Might have popped it for a small raise preflop to thin the field a little... but it wouldn't have paid off for you.
Hand 9: Complete the unraised SB. They're connectors. Hell, at this level, it's playable. You didn't hit the flop hard enough... but if you had, the other players will pay you off enough to make it worth a penny.
Hand 10: Gotta fold.
Hand 11: Good fold.
Hand 12: Two weak from early position. Fold. Actually, just fold it anywhere.
Hand 13: Fold. Fold. Fold.
Hand 14: Too weak for middle position, and definitely not worth calling a raise. Fold preflop.
Hand 15: Yup. Fold.
Hand 16: Fold.
These hands really don't tell us, or you much. Other than the misplay of the pocket tens, I'd say you just got some cold cards. You really only had one marginally solid hand (KJo) in that sixteeen hand run. Your folds were good. You overplayed some weak holdings. Remember.. that's the mistake your opponents make, not you. Be patient. The cards will come.
These should probably be over in Hand Histories, for future reference. Also... next time you post, try to post some more interesting decisions. 70 percent of these hands were easy preflop folds. Theres no real decision to be made there and nothing to analyze. you're not going to learn much from them. Good luck...
-
I'm concerned about the limits you are playing. If you really feel you are a good player, you need to get a little ballsy and up the ante. It's tough for anyone at any level to consistently dominate the No HOld em Fold em tables.
-
I mean "No Fold Em Hold Em". A little late night dyslexic drunkeness.
-
I guess the thing is my bankroll has been taking a few major hits lately, and being that I am not, independantly wealthy I tend to clench... right now I hit dead broke in my online account, and have been mainly playing freeroll tournaments and playing offline... I'm up offline and in total i have essentially broken even... however my online account is kaput. I'm really up in the air about seriously starting again online, I have finished in at least the top 50 on the pokerstars tourneys out of 5k people or so, but I don't know how to classify the average play quality of freeroll players.. so its difficult for me to gauge my play...
-
based on Fortune's feedback, you need a tighter, more consistent game. Playing freerolls probably won't help that happen.
Go back to the books, and based on what they say, make a chart for yourself that says what you'll play in what situations. I have one and it keeps my game consistent. When I feel I'm playing too much "by feel" or I lose a hand and realize I misplayed it, I go to the chart.
It says what hands I'll play preflop for ALL of the following situations:
Early postion, middle position, late position, against a single raise, against a raise and reraise, against multiple limpers and SB vs BB play.
And it tells me what to do (raise 3-5xbb, call, reraise or fold, fold fold)
Then I have another little part that reminds me what to look for facing a raise (or reraise) post flop. (no I won't sent it to you, lol)
But, if nothing else it will keep you from playing junk in any position at any time. And it will keep you from playing medeocre cards in early position or against a raise in front of you (even if you're on the blind). AND it will tell you that you have to raise, so you don't let people into the hand that have no business being there.
