Split pot question?

I recently had a hand where the pot was uneven and it ended up being a split pot. In any casino game I have played the extra chip always goes to the person closest to the left of the dealer. My friends say that it should go in the pot as an added chip.

Can you play either way? Or is there a totally different game where the chip goes into the next pot. I was reading about some thing called igloo http://www.mtaonline.net/~chilcoot/poker/rules.htm where they may put it into the next hand played.

It seems kind of unfair if that chip goes into the next pot b/c a person could win the next pot who wasn't in the split pot hand and he really dindt' win that chip.

Also "chopping" is a term I have heard in ring games where one of the blinds doesn't want to play the hand and you can chop the blinds?? where the big and little blinds get their respective blinds back/ is this true? and is that a possibility in tournament games?

I believe the method you mentioned with the extra going to the involved player nearest to the left of the dealer is the most common/most correct method, however in a home game whatever method is used by the "house rules" is fine. In the end, it doesn't realy make all that much difference to the game play.

My house rule is that in a split pot, the aggressor gets the unsplittable portion.

My house rule is the extra portion goes to the one who can take a shot faster.

Seems like a lot of my house rules involve hard alcohol. :|

Chopping: When you sit down at a live cash game check to see if the people next to you will chop or not. If they agree to chop, you should not look at your cards if you are in the blinds unless someone bets before you. If it is folded around to the blinds, each blind just takes their blind back. That way the casino does not get a rake.

Chopping in Tournament does not make sense, since you are attempting to get all the chips and the casino does not charge a rake.

He's talking about in a showdown, when both people have the same hand, and the pot is odd. Who gets the extra dollar?

"Chopping" is a term used in both contexts ...

When there's split pot you'll hear people say "chop-chop".

When it's folded all the way around to the blinds pre-flop, you might hear your fellow blind dude ask you "Chop it?" or "Chop-Chop?" .. it just means ... "do you want to take our blind back and avoid giving the casino money (the rake), cu'z we're not gonna make much ourselves anyways?".

Umm...since when would the casino not rake a split pot? If the pot is under the min rake, they wouldn't rake it, but otherwise, I'm pretty sure they would. I expect this would be regarded the same in the blinds situation you mention - if it's enough to be raked, they don't want it escaping without that happening, so they'd leave you with the post-rake blinds to split. Why you'd do this rather than just take the free small blind, I don't know.

Am I missing something, or just not understanding?
