6 max = teh uber l33t.
Full ring is boring and severly cards oriented. 6 max is action packed and filled with horrible players who will call down with AKo unimproved facing aggressive betting. I <3 6max. Also, you see each player play more hands and your notes are better. I can play 2 tables of 6max and keep detailed notes on everyone.

I second that. Ring game NL is basically just about camping out and waiting for big hands, while six max you have many more chances to outplay your opponents. The only time I'll play ring games now is when I'm on a bad streak or tilt--then I can just go into rock mode and basically just play pocket pairs, AK, and AQ. Poker is pretty hard to lose at when you're seeing around 15% of flops and waiting for TPTK, overpairs, and flopped top two-pair or better before getting a lot of your money in the pot. It's also rather boring though.Quote:

6 max is all about outplaying your opponents on a majority of pots. Full rings are all about patience and recognizing the right moments to swoop in. They're different skills. It could be said that ring games are easier to beat for the unskilled player; then again, you can be an impatient, near-maniac player and turn a profit on 6 max just by betting like a bat out of hell (as long as you find the right tables). I actually have found it easier to beat 6 max tables because my default poker setting likes to semi-bluff and deploy complex bluffing strategies, like fake check-raising and so forth. I often lack patience, so I am trying to make myself play full ring games to learn to be more patient. I think there's more money to be made, more quickly, at 6 max; but then again all it takes is to land at the wrong table at the wrong time to lose half your bankroll - been there a couple times, which has yet to happen to me in a ring.
Bottom line, I don't know what I'm saying. I think both require a certain approach and set of skills to be successful. 6 max might require more betting skill, ring might require more discipline... maybe that's the easiest way to put it. I find it easier to play skillfully than to play with discipline, so I'm challenging myself right now by playing ring. I'm also playing some Omaha which seems to me even more of a patient/disciplined game than full ring hold 'em - that is, if you want to make money at it.

In a nutshell: I like 6 max better.
I wonder if there is anyone who doesn't? I would like to hear their opinions on why they like a full ring better. I became a better player in the 6max, but is there anyone who stricly plays full rings that wants to chime in?

For pure profit I play mostly full ring because it doesn't demand the concentration of 6-max, however, get a 2-3 strong coffees in me, and I'm wired for sound, bring on the 6-max. If you are at all distracted or tilting, 6-max is a good way to flush your BR.
Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges, It is better to be good at both, because poker demands the ability to adapt quickly to situational changes.
I find changing gears to be more effective in full ring, where in 6-max you basically keep playing aggressively or you'll be killed, by stinky primates that like to eat banana avatars. :evil:
