Reliability of Carnigie Melon data?

There is a "Player's Guide" that you will find posted on the internet, see:

The claim is that this 'research" was done at Carnigie Melon University, and they even provide C code for the computer programs used.

They examine the Sklansky/Maumuth guidelines for starting hands in hold'em poker. Based on their computer calculations analyzing millions of hands, they suggest changes to the Sklansky/Malmuth groups.

Is this a legitiamte site? Can one rely on the data they present?

They have some very nice results from their program that, to me, are some of the best I've seen, provided they are accurate :).

For example, they have a chart that shows, based on a run of 12,000,000 hands, how often you will make each of the hands by the flop, the turn, and the river. I like that chart because it sort of helps me put the overall game in perspective. To know that you'll only get a full house by the river on 2.6% of your hands, and you'll get a flush by the river 3% of the time, helps me to visualize how the game usually progresses.

I think so. I've heard in referenced in other poker writing. I think Tanaka references the data in his advice on starting hands. I may be wrong since its been a long time since I read that stuff.

It's as good of a list to start with as any. As you get better you learn the characteristics of various hands and in what situations they shine.
