playing with a small bankroll

after my first deposit of 50 about a month ago, i was able to get to about $343, however i sensed a bit of a slump lately. The cards just werent coming, and when they did (like A-A) the nasty habit of partypoker putting down 4 suited cards on the board to beat me came. Overall I didn't like the situation so I cashed out leaving me only 25. Should I continue with no limit or should i switch to limit and see if I can slowly make some ground there. It isn't impossible, ive worked my way up from $29 before. Just want your advice and what I should be doing to increase my chances.

One of the problems with limit is that it is harder to punish players who are trying to draw out on you. No limit is more profitable for me but everyone has different preferences.

NL is a sinner and a saint for me. its won me money and lost me money. Usually lose because I can't leave the table when I should.

I'd definitely stick to NL if I were you. But $25 is too less of a bankroll if you're not gonna play say 0,05/0,10 and I don't believe PP has those tables. I'm not saying it can't be done but if you suffer some bad beats you're out. You need a bigger buffer. Why not just try and get it up a bit. If you have a good day it shouldn't be a problem and IF you have a bad day well...then it's nothing to do about it. Another reason I think one could use a bigger br is that when you think you got the best hand you probably are but if it aint the nuts then one might lay down to a big bet if it's the last money. I want to be able to call an all-in and if I lose I will be able to buy in again...not having to deposit money again. Around $200 should be a fine br for a long term winning player, playing low blinds NL. At least $200. Hope you manage it whatever way you decide to try. Good luck and have fun :)

I would agree with bite. I personally try to keep between $150-$200 in my bankroll. I usually play .25/.50 blinds in NL and the max buyin at the table is $50. I feel comfortable with that amount in my bankroll. I will usually enter a table with the max-buyin ($50). I like to have as much available as possible because if and when the nuts comes and I have callers I want to be able to have enough to make the pot as large as possible if I can get callers to go all-in with me.

I personally have found that I have much larger swings during the rare times that I play limit hold 'em. Most likely due to having more people play their draws and getting beat on the river because of it. For that reason, I prefer NL over limit.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference. Good luck.

argh! its gone, limped in with q-j, got top pair (jacks), good kicker, felt very confident about my hand, 2 hearts on the board, i bet big to stop anyone from chasing, of course some dumbass calls a big bet on a flush draw, of course it comes after ive already bet a lot of money on the hand. I really want to try poker stars or ultimatebet now, I see so many flushes on pp its insane.

Good thing I've done well enough in live action to cover most of it.. I figure for the year I'm down maybe $100 not bad considering I play 3X a week at least.

I need to make a spread sheet to find out what I take to the tables, and what I leave with.. Start keeping better track of where my bankroll is.

lol, I my PP account just hit $1,500 and I cashed out my first $500 a couple days ago. Although I'd probably be just fine playing with $500. Furthermore, my budget is such that if I really wanted to I could deposit a big enough bankroll to play the $200 NL game (my guess is 2-3k would be sufficent since I see players going all-in less often and betting 1x the BB more often.)

Personally, I feel more comfortable having a large bankroll relative to the game I'm playing. It allows me to get more aggressive and grow by taking chances. Certainly, on the subject of playing with too small of a bankroll, just don't do it! As I've said before for $25 NL you should be able to cover $250 - $500.

BTW, I'm told by reliable sources that limit has WORSE swings than no-limit since your edge on poor players is smaller.

Also now that i think of it it might not be such a good idea because when I play in play in school, but its always short handed or heads up only, and I havent read anything about that, though I do better than most people i play.

I think for a $25 max buy-in no limit tables with 0.25 and 0.50 blinds, you need a minimum of $250 to be able to survive the downswings.

well seeing as my experience with this, its not a terrible idea, if you are patient and willing to grind it out, but knowing you are playing with half your bankroll really does play on your mind, even if you tell yourself it won't. Trust me, it does. Why not try ultimatebet or pokerstars? They have .10-.25 blinds games and also penny ante games, grind out some cash and slowly move up when you have the adequate bankroll.

If you have $50 that you are comfortable losing, go ahead. Get your feet wet for a little real money. Be advised that unless you are a solid player, you will lose it. In fact, as mentioned above, even if you are solid you will take some bad beats that will hurt and quickly wipe out a $50 bank roll.

It sounds to me that because of your age you do not have the financial means to seriously play for real money.

I agree w/ Fnord that you want $250-500 to be comfortable, at least for me to be comfortable. I cashed out a bunch and started over w/ $200.00 and tripled that. I'm going to cash out again and get a bonus.

Maybe you should try pokertracker (http://www.pokertracker.com). It's a must for serious poker players...

I think you can play with a small bankroll if you play rocklike at a loose table where u will get called anyway. But it will leave a lot of value on the tables. I think it's better to play at micro-limit with that bankroll. And the games are even easier there.

I may be crazy, but it sounds like you aren't old enough to be playing online in the first place, especially if you are playing at school. But it's not like I don't do illegal things all the time(I'm a cronic jaywalker). 50 bucks is only enough if they haven't pressed the bad beat button on you. I bought on for 100 on sunday night, made it up to 830, got done at 4am(5 hours later) with 593. I took 493 into my neteller account immediatly before bed. I was in the .50-1.00 $100 max buy no limit room.

So yesterday I figured "f' it. let's try that again." Took my hundred and lost 60-70 immediately. brought back 100 from neteller(coughjunkiecough) lost all the way down to 17.75(minus 182.25 for the day). I decided to put 100 more on from my neteller account and made all of my money back plus 30 bucks. It was weird though because it was literally seconds after depositing the money back on the account, I started actually hitting my cards and people were folding on my bluffs.

- first hand won 10 on a stone cold river bluff (107.75 in chips)
-3 hands later I win 40 bucks hitting a set on the flop with pocket rockets. ($149.50 in chips)
- lost 22 with pocket 8s to pocket Qs that set up on the flop a couple of hands later. ($126.50 in chips)
- After stealing the blinds on the next hand i got crazy. I know this guys is blazing mad after this one... I was in the small blind with 45c. some guy raised it to 5 and got another caller along with me :oops: . I flopped top pair with an outside straight draw. I bet 8. dude called (oops...) next card was rags. I check he bets 5 i call. river was a 5. I bet 45. he calls with pocket rockets I win $130 with 45c. ($195.00 in chips)
- very next hand I lose with big slick 2 pair because this guy caught my ace on the river for a q high flush. lost 43.50 consolation prize? I won 7.75 on the next hand with 6s full of aces. great... ($159.25 in chips)
- after a nice tilt session by me I was down to 125 but I flopped a 27-two pair to get me back up to 141 .
-got deal AA in the big blind very next hand and EVERYONE folded before I could even attempt to bet. sweet.
-I then hit a set of tens, flopped 2 pair(K3 bigblind),rivered a stone cold bluff pot, and played 25s, hit a flush and won $25 against some one with absolutly nothing to get me up to 201.75.
-My last hand of the night was hilarious and i posted it in the hand history section. pocket 5s,
