Hey all of you guys who have joined my NLHE Foundations Course. This is the new general chat thread for the BC regulars like yourselves. I propose two topics of conversation to get things started.
1. What do you guys think about the Hulk Hogan scandal?
2. Ask me anything you want. I work at home, and I get bored out of my mind really easily.

Did you start playing poker at 2NL?
And if so, how long did you spend at this level?
Is Hulk Hogan still alive? hahaha. WWE is not very popular around here. Is considered just for kids.
I know that in America WWE has lots of fans. Just for curiosity (i don't know ANYTHING about that subject), can you tell me why? Having boxing matchs, MMA fights...etc.... why do people enjoy WWE? Is there something i'm missing??
I actually started playing $5.50 SNGs at random when I first started. I won because the games were super soft, and I wasn't very good at them. When I actually started focusing on a cash game, it was fixed-limit hold'em at $0.02/0.04 (the lowest stakes - it has $0.01/0.02 blinds). I was knocking on the door of mid-stakes in LHE when I actually quit poker after the UIGEA hit in late 2006. Renton (another long-term FTR member) talked me into playing NLHE cash games in mid-2007. I borrowed $200 from him to play 10nl and paid him back within a couple of weeks while leaving myself $200 to play with.Quote:

Regarding professional wrestling, when it's done correctly, it's very entertaining and invokes a lot of emotion. It's much like going to see a movie or loving a television show like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. WWE in particular does not do it very well for a variety of reasons, but most of their money is made on merchandising now. To give an example: When you go to see a movie, you don't sit and think something like, "That car exploding was so fake and set up to be a stunt," if you want to enjoy it. It's just a show like anything else, and it has its own rules and guidelines like any other fantasy universe.
If you look at the history of professional wrestling in Europe and North America, you had carnies go around and have open challenges to anyone in the crowd of these towns they would go to. This is basically where catch wrestling came from (consider Josh Barnett, Gene LeBell, others). These men had to be able to dispatch random "tough guys" quickly because they were putting their lives on the line to make a living. They eventually figured out that fixing fights and running it like a scam artist type of situation manipulating the crowd allowed them to make a lot more money from bets on the fights while simultaneously keeping their chances of being seriously injured minimal. This is a part of why it was so important to "protect the business" by having good guys and bad guys not seen together in public, etc., for such a long time. That situation slowly evolved into the caricature of professional wrestling that exists today in the form of the WWE over decades.
One more thing I want to point out is that the WWE style of professional wrestling is much different than just about anywhere else in the world. It's much more PG, the storylines and plots are much more shallow (and often make no sense), and the in-ring action is designed primarily to keep the performers as healthy as possible for as long as possible (less action with worse workers a lot of the time). The emotional element just isn't there because of this and the fact that until the past year or two, they haven't really brought in much new talent for the better part of a decade, and people get tired of seeing the same old people over and over. This is why John Cena gets booed incredibly heavily even though he's the company's top good guy.
I see you are from NC, I grew up in Goldsboro, NC. I sure do miss being down there when winter time comes around.

I heard something that I really liked and it's stuck with me. It usually helps me out a lot and I think it was the online player Jamie Staples who said it.
He said to remember that 'Everyone is trying their best. Nobody is purposefully being a donk and giving away real money, they're just trying their best to play poker.' I don't know why it does but that always makes me feel better.
There is also a very good book by Jared Tendler - The Mental Game of Poker. I can't say how much that book helped me out.
If all else fails, you can always try and remember the times when YOU suck out on other people :) That always makes you feel good.
The first time I ever moved up to 200nl, I had the worst run that I'd ever seen in my life up to that point. Inside of my first 8000-9000 hands, I was down $1,500 in AIEV. I was up less than a buy-in with sets (of which I'd had 27). I had two situations where I'd flopped a set higher than someone else who also flopped a set, and I lost both for a full buy-in. So I took a day off to do something fun, moved down for about 30,000 hands and then moved back up. I came back and had what was at the time the best month in poker of my life. I was also on the top 10 earners for full-ring cash games in both 100nl and 200nl at PokerStars that month. (thread on this)Quote:

I highly recommend Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em. It really explains the game in a way that gives a great foundation for understanding the practical things that go into playing the game on all streets.Quote:

What's your day job and how come come you don't play much anymore?
I'm a full-time, self-employed writer in the casino/gambling space. I've retained most of the benefits of playing poker full-time with a flexible schedule and not really having a boss while getting away from the disadvantages like crazy swings, stress and being unsure if I'm going to receive my withdrawals in a reasonable amount of time.Quote:

Seeing these ranges visually really drives home a lot of the point about polarized and depolarized ranges.
So what do we think of Donald Trump?
Lot of intelligent players at micro double or nothings it seems. Just played a 6-handed SNG that got down to 4 handed, with one of the players clearly sat out from the start with 8bb. He cashed.
The US would be a laughing stock across the international community if he gets any further in his challenge. I mean how can anybody take him seriously with that haircut?Quote:

Here in Argentina is IMPOSSIBLE to discuss politics with someone who doesn't think the same. It's really sad. You can actually have a fight with a friend for political arguing.
I'll answer your second question first: I generally just avoid talking politics with people in the same way that I avoid talking about religion because of the kind of thing you just said. The vast majority of people are stuck in their frame of thinking and can't think about the big picture, how politics actually works, etc.Quote:

I've never understood the appeal of baseball - it doesn't seem the most exciting of sports to watch, or even play.
I actually love the way Americans can wrestle throughout school, I think that's pretty cool and I would have loved to have done something like that back when I was in school.
Aww man, GSP is an animal - I have a lot of time for that guy. I have only recently started watching some of the old UFC events where GSP was absolutely dominant. Is there a reason for Rickson over any other Gracie?

Baseball is a collection of very strategic sub-games that are largely separate from each other. Because there's not a lot of overt action (ie: constant tactics like American football, football/soccer or basketball), it harder to watch without a lot of understanding of what's going on. The pitching game is 90 percent of it or more.Quote:
