Implied Odds Are Underrated

When coming up with the first topic for this series, I asked myself the following question: “What is the basic concept that most players underrate in terms of importance?” I came up with implied odds.

For most people, when you think of implied odds, you think of calling with a chance of hitting a hand so that you can get paid off more than the current size of the pot on future streets. However, implied odds has a much broader set of applications than this. For example, if you make a semi-bluff, you're often relying on implied odds to make your hand profitable. Along these lines, anything you do that takes into consideration favorable conditions for future betting can be considered to fall under the heading of implied odds.

For the sake of this column, we're going to focus on calling scenarios and the things that you need to consider (that you probably aren't considering well enough) when evaluating them.

miss all outs= -7 (34/46) = -5.17
hit a flush, dont get paid= (.3)(9/46)(17)=1
hit a flush get paid= (.7)(9/46)(34)= 4.65
hit a str8 dont get paid= .1(3/46)(17)= .11
hit a str8 get paid= .9(3/46)(34)= 1.99

add em all up and you get +2.58

although quick question, wouldnt we only be winning 27 when we win, not 34? ill be on the chat for a couple of hours.

The $7 you're missing is the amount Villain bets on the turn. The pot is $17 after his bet and before our call [on the turn].

Tried this there now.

Everytime I do (3/46)(0.1) on the calculator I get 6.52173913x10^-3

The rest of mine came out like this (I just used the first 3 decimal places):

1. We miss all of our outs (34/46)(-7) = -5.1739
2. We hit a flush out, we don’t get paid off (9/46)(0.058) = 0.986
3. We hit a flush out, we do get paid off (9/46)(0.136) = 4.624
4. We hit a gut-shot out, we don’t get paid off this one fucked up
5. We hit a gut-shot out, we do get paid off (3/46)(0.9) = 1.972

3/46 = 0.0652173913

0.0652173913 * 01 = 0.00652173913

0.00652173913 = 6.52173913x10^-3

It's just a way people write small & big numbers.

Oh yeah standard form. It doesn't happen in Excel so I'll use that from now on.

Total EV = 2.586957

Calling or raising question.

1. Villain folds, we win the pot and turn bet
2. Villain calls we win
3. Villain calls we lose

1. (0.25)(17) = 4.25
2. (0.146739)(34) = 4.98913
3. (0.603261)(-24) = -14.4783

Total EV of shoving turn = -$5.23913
Total EV of calling = $1.02

Calling is a lot better than raising.
