After he calls the turn I have to shutdown right? Just wondering about my raise on the flop, I am trying to rep a slow played big pair, probably TT-QQ or that I have flatted with 77/33/22 and flopped a set.

Thoughts?

You are only repping a bad bluff here. Would you raise this flop with a set?

flop raise terrible, just call -- yer ahead of most missed overs.

There is a also a case to be made for 3-betting preflop.

As d0zer said. Flop does not hit his range well so you can call IP with a hand that has decent showdown value.

When bluffing the flop you should think about what turn cards you can continue betting on also is the villain b/f much here etc. So on the turn your really hoping for an A,Q or K possibly where you can fire another barrel. K is a scare card.

But for example if you had AcQc here this would be a better spot to bluff the flop because you can now bet any club A,Q or K on the turn, A or Q your vbetting and club you semi bluffing and a K not a club your just bluffing a scare card with 1 overcard.

AdQd AsQs same story and your AJs as well that have BDFD would be better hands in your range to bluff this flop with rather than AQo etc.

You're right. I would never raise a set on this board. I would probably raise with 88-JJ, flat call with sets and QQ+. Point taken. Shit hand.

I'm not picking on OP here, but I think that this hand should be in the digest because of how instructive it is. There are tons of reasons that this is not a good spot to bluff.

Terrible flop to bluff as most have said - trying to get nearly all villains to fold any overpair on this flop and turn is asking for trouble. On the flip side, raising a set on this flop may be a good way to get paid off depending on the villain.

I hope you don't think I'm picking on you OP, but some of your recent posts suggest that you are not interpreting flop textures as well as you could (particularly with reference to both your own perceived range and your opponents range), and I think this may be causing you a few problems at 5nl. Definitely worth reading up on and I found this really helped my own game earlier this year.

No, you're right. I do struggle with flop textures and I do struggle with ranges as well. Is there anything you can suggest that I can use to help me improve?

I'm sure there's a shed-load of articles and good books out there that others can recommend, but the book I found good at an entry level for range, hud and board texture analysis was Phil Gordon's Gold Book. I don't find the book a fat lot of use now, but at the time it changed the way I thought about the game completely as I didn't even know about things like huds, ranges and Pokerstove and how to use them.

what exactly are you trying to accomplish by raising other than ' bluffing'

I also had a similar exp w/ this book. It help get ya going on combinatorics, using a range chart, its def a good book to study w/.

My bad, was too busy focusing on flop texture and bluff.

Villain was 23/19. Cbet 80%. Had never seen villain get out of line.

If he was cbetting 80% his betting range on the flop should be fairly weak so raising his cbets on the flop isn't a bad strategy overall just select better hands to do it with.
