I realize 99.9% of the time this is a flush. Could I have done anything else in this hand to get him to fold or is it just bad luck?

Why would you want him to fold?

Because he's drawing to a flush & if he hits it I will usually pay him off.

raise flop bigger is most important part of this hand.

as played, meh, about $1.42 into $4.80 after rake right? so you need to be good about 30%. And it's his first hand. Q9/79 maybe just enough for this to be a call, it's close. He'll have a flush over half the time, that's not the issue. Will he have it over 70% of the time is the important question. Fold isn't terrible. But i doubt i fold.

I think betting with the intention to get him to fold is the wrong point of view in this hand.

With such a dominating hand you're drowning in value when he calls the turn, and say he hits a pair on the river hell probably call another bet so you're drowning in even more value!

To be fair, if he's paying off 4flushes every time they come in and villain shoves, it probably is more +EV to have him fold.

Ideally don't pay off obv flushes, and bet for value because you want money :?:

Agreed. But he needs to learn not to do this which is why he's here.

Primarily, imo, he needs to learn that when he's betting to out price draws it's not because he wants them to fold but because he wants them to call and that that makes him money.

I think at one point in time we all thought we were wanting folds in these situations and I think a major breakthrough in poker comes with learning to exploit villains who make calls without odds instead of hoping they'll fold. And only after that realizing that they sometimes hit. Variance is a bitch.

Yeah, you have a set. You are betting for value. You want calls. If you feel angry or upset when he calls, you need to adjust your mentality and learn emotional control.

VERY MUCH A CALL.y didnt u raise it up after the flop. u wount get into situations like your in now. he has top pair with a good kicker he thinks hes on a winner . trips are the hardest hand to work out

When he calls 66c into a $1.41 pot with $1.52 behind drawing on a 4:1 shot, he's making a really bad call. This is what we want. You can't pay him off enough on the river to make his turn call good.

You want him to call this turn bet. And when he does, you made enough money off him through the hand to cover how much you pay him off when he shoves and you call. He misses this river 4 times and hits it once. Thus, 4 times you win 75c + 66c, one time you pay off another $1.52 + 66c.

You do not want him to fold. Learn that.

I don't know why I do it. I spend the flop & turn saying to myself I know he is chasing the flush, so I am gonna make him pay to get it. Then, when they usually hit it on the river and shove, I change my mind and start convincing myself they wasn't chasing the flush and have now shoved as a bluff, trying to rep the flush, because nobody would call the amounts I bet if they were chasing.

A lot of the time it just comes down to me out-thinking myself, I am trying to change it but it's a bad habit.

It's NL2. The typical player's range is far wider than 99% flushes. How often do you see players overplay holdings like overpairs and two pairs in situations like this one?
