The Question: What have you discovered about yourself from playing poker?
That I suck at poker
hehe, i was thinking more along the lines of personal revelation. why do you suck at poker? i think i suck at poker for a variety of reasons aside from my skill level which is admittedly low. Here are a few:
1. i am sometimes impatient and impulsive.
2. i sometimes lose situational awareness and bet without thinking.
3. i sometimes allow negative moods to affect my game and become self-destructive or chase after a win to elevate my mood.
If you make a list like this and find parallels with other realms of your life then you may be in personal revelation territory.
I think I'll get a degree in psychology and start my own practice. I'll help patients work through their "issues" in life by working through them first at the poker table. :D
Seriously what I have learnt:
1. Tilt control:The less I tilt playing golf, the less I tilt playing poker and vise versa.
I quit playing golf for 20 years due to tilt while playing (throw clubs, break clubs, etc.). After I started playing poker (in '08) I saw how tilt affected my game. When I learned to control tilt in poker it helped controlling tilt in golf (started back in '09). Now I can get my ass kicked in both poker and golf and not tilt...too much.:-D
2. Patience
Slow golf players and cold cards will cause lack of #1
3. Over confidence
No matter how good you are at golf and poker, someone will easily kick your ass.
4. No matter how many times I say it, I really don't mean it when I say "I hate this fucking game". Applies to both games.
Ive discovered, I never get bored. In r/l & pokering.
1. I want to have sex with bdestefanis's avatar
2. I enjoy goading people into a state of emotional shambles
3. Because I see myself as a calm and rational person, I have way less control over my emotions than I think I do.
4. Emotional control is way harder than I thought it was.
Discipline! fits in everywhere.
from poker i learned the importance of following through with actions that i know to be correct or the most +ev, instead of doing something else 'just because i feel like it'
i stopped going on tilt for the most part once i started following nit br management. it allowed me to stop looking at a session as a way to build a small and vulnerable br, and instead view it as an opportunity to practice playing as good poker as i could. the extra cushioning room from the nit management meant that i could try and apply new concepts that i didnt have a strong hold on, because even if i applied them badly, it wouldnt do serious damage to my br, but would rather, and more importantly, give me an opportunity to expand the reaches of my game
no self control. cant be objective enough. let my emotions get in the. but i knew these before i started playing poker.
1. I think I got few psychic disorders from my parents.
2. And few more of them...
that i'm prone to injuring those i love and damaging relationships just to play a game. it's likely my biggest leak.
The importance of being honest with yourself
That I really can't quit anything I ever start, which is my greatest strength and greatest weakness. And success fucks with my mind.
Waiting for Legal Poker in USA before I turn 30.
That with time and patience I can do anything. Unfortunately I have very little time and nowadays increasingly less patience.
and plus 1 on the narcissism.
SAME!!! (except I started playing poker in 2010 and quite golf in 2005)
Biggest thing I've worked out about 'me' is my weakness of underestimating somebody (or their hand). It seem the quickest way to be parted with my cash. Even the fishiest fish gets the nuts now & then.
And I have an obsessive compulsive part of my personality that I never realised existed. WHO THE HELL INVENTED POKER ONLINE??? It's like main vein speed addiction!!
As for the debate about bdestefanis and angryafrican's avatars.
It appears in dispute so to settle the matter they're both coming to my place to ask me to determine who's better looking. I have promised to provide the bottle of baby oil & a twister mat... and be objective while considering their personalities as an integral part of beauty.
That drinking alcohol really does make everything look better.
Stay honest and have Pacience!
