Wuf, I really expect better of you than to post garbage like that.
You can't "get money back" by losing money. That 4.8B in tax refunds was money that it had overpaid in taxes: the same way that any money that an individual gets back at tax time is money that he overpaid in taxes.
And the sensationalist number here is they didn't have to pay 4.8B in taxes, because *THEY LOST MONEY*.
Really, wuf? Really?
I didn't fact check in the slightest, but that's not what the article says. You may be right though because it does appear to state contradictions. Had just glanced at it and was looking for an excuse to make a thread bashing the richest people in human history yet magically there's little money for people who work for a living...
Sheez, I'm not rich and I pay 36% in taxes on average.
Your fault for not changing your name to Exxon Mobil or General Electric because then you could bribe the government for tax cuts then use those tax cuts to bribe the government even more for such huge tax rebates that the American people are paying you just for existing

Ban OP!!
Even if all the facts were wrong, the spirit is right. Fuck them rich bastards.
Was waiting for a comment like Eugmac's.
Aren't we all trying to become 'rich bastards' by playing poker, working, etc... so basically we're trying to fuck ourselves? Taxation masturbation?
There's "well off" rich and there's "wtfbbq nobody in the world should be allowed to have so much money" rich. I doubt any of us are ever going to belong to category B.

FUCK WHITES
Okay I've been coming back to this for days, trying to find a way to explain my position without an essay. Not sure I can do it, but I'll try
It's not about punishing the successful, it's about running a national economy with a hand towards egalitarianism. The way society is structured is that when people do not have much money they also don't have much opportunity and have low living standards, while people with a lot of money have tremendous opportunity and high living standards. This means that in order to run an egalitarian society, people who struggle to pay bills should pay low taxes while people who do not should pay higher taxes.
The way it is today, people who struggle to pay bills and live in near poverty end up paying like 30% taxes, while the richest of the rich who have enough money to consume anything in the markets pay single digit taxes and some even get such huge rebates that they pay no taxes and in fact they become the tax collectors. Oil companies are a good example of this. They're the wealthiest corporations on the planet with a GDP bigger than some wealthy/modern yet not huge countries, yet their taxes have been in the negative billions over the last decade.
In a society that cares about the people, rich people are still rich. Something like a 50% tax rate on income above 5 million would only put a dent in their living standards, yet it would pull an enormous burden off the poor and middle and would actually make things more fair. That's not necessarily the exact policy I support, but it's MUUUUCH better than our current regressive state of uber rich paying little and poor paying a lot.
As a conservative (I'm assuming you label yourself with conservatism), it should not sit kindly with you that the so-called conservative party of the last forty years has actually been nothing but a lie and over the decades taxes on the wealthy have gone down tremendously while having gone up on the poor and middle substantially. Republicans' "low taxes" stance is only low for the rich who bribe them. Republicans adore taxing poor people
I'm actually for one of two methods... either a flat tax rate no matter how much you make, or a movement towards a non-income based taxation system, such as sales tax based method of funding government. I'm more of a mess than a conservative, but I believe in being financially conservative... also conservative on the amount of government we have in the US...
The real problem isn't taxes, but laws/lawmakers being corrupt and spending revenue on special interests. Paying for things that actually help the country isn't nearly as expensive as paying for things that fuck the country yet help the few. "Amount" of government is non-sequitur and irrelevant. Some things we absolutely need government for, but one of the reasons so many people hate government (including myself) is because a ton of what it does is not what it should. We need less drug war government, but more tech and infrastructure investment government, for example
FWIW, part of me likes flat taxation, but the problem is that flat taxes are really just regressive, and they effect rich people into being more important than poor people
Interestingly, uber high taxes on income isn't actually that high and is economically super powerful because it incentivizes businesses to pump profits into investments since it lowers their taxes. Low taxes on business lets them choose whether to hoard or to invest back into their business, high taxes pretty much forces them to invest, and this helps the society greatly. This is something the US used to do back when we were a juggernaut middle class. Hoarding is very destructive for a society since it siphons value from its economy and thus makes the society poorer.
The US is richer than it has ever been. But the reason poverty levels and unemployment are very high is because that richness is concentrated at the very top. No matter how you wanna slice it, right-wing policy is a serfdom of wealthy royalty riding on the backs of the workers. There used to be a time when there weren't really any homeless people in the US, but that was also back when nobody was so rich they could throw away money on twelve ferraris
Put an end to the monstrously rich and you'll find that suffering masses disappear. But this doesn't happen because humans are naive and mostly unempathetic, and when a billionaire loses a few million dollars he feels bad, and when people feel bad they try to stop it even if it means indirectly others will suffer. It's also more Tragedy of the Commons
An important thing to keep in mind is that "individualism" is not a normal human concept, but a distortion brought about by our malformed modernism. We are meant for small, tight-nit communities, and in those paradigms, the "good of society" is of paramount importance. Yet being raised in modern society tends to strip this reality from our intellects. We then become entrenched in destructive individualistic ideas. One of them can be found in our extreme ideas of low taxes and high ownership
Not to ramble on and on, but money really sucks. The monetary system is a piece of shit that fucks people every which way. Under a society run by monetarism, humans are not valued for normal human things, but for how much money they have or get. Most of the suffering we take for granted is not normal, it's a necessity of a society based in a massively flawed money system.
This is why when considering economic issues, it is important for policy to form around what works best for the society, not misinformed ideas like "I got it therefore it's mine, end of story"
That's because not paying attention means it's possible you're right, while paying attention to only the wrong means you're wrong
You made it less amusing.
48.8 billion clearly isn't enough
I know you're trying to dig on me being a faggot. I used to be a sponge who did everything he could to find out why he was wrong, but that process ended up making me right about so many things that I started getting egotistical about my rightness and it's started to take over where it's becoming more difficult for me to admit the times I'm still wrong. So I need to go out of my way to post stupid shit just as an attempt to bring me back to reality where being wrong is a good thing
Not digging. I'm sure the article was political-, blogosphere-, reddit-bait at first and I came out way ahead by simply not hearing anything about it.

Quote:
The president blew up – in as much as “No Drama” Obama ever blows up – and wondered what is needed for the GOP to say “Yes” to anything. Read between the lines of that presser, and you get this: “I tried to give them Social Security. I tried to give them Medicare and Medicaid. I gave those things willingly, despite cries of outrage from my ungrateful, foolish, obnoxious left flank, and asked only for a pittance in tax revenues in exchange. Shame on the GOP for not rampaging these social programs when I offered them the chance to do so.”
I heard about this and had to google it because I was sure it was false...
