actually I think the odds of something getting passed is fairly high, the problem will be the stipulations, restrictions, etc...They aren't going to be nearly as player friendly as in the past and certainly won't be rewarding sites like PokerStars. I wish they could somehow use the PokerStars model in terms of creating legislation and laws for regulation but I don't think we'll get that lucky.Quote:

I don't get it - if the feds really want to legalize it - all they need to do is require the sites to register in the US and send an IRS 1099 to each account holder for any winnings for the calendar year, just like any other non-wage payer has to do here.
It shouldn't be all that hard for the sites to come up with a way to report ring + tourney winnings less deposits, transfers in, etc to come up with a net number to report once a year. If someone wants to claim losses, they would have to itemize just like any live gambling losses. Pretty simple imo.
well, "the fed" is not one entity... the bill being presented to congress is how we find out if "the fed" wants to legalize online poker.

From reading the cliffs earlier today, it appears that this bill will allow the B&M's a monopoly on the US market for at least the first two years.
IMO, I would imagine that, if passed, it will be heatedly debated in arbitration at the WTO.

I recommend strongly that we all contact our representatives to voice our support for this bill.
Here's Rep. Barton speaking at the WSOP about the bill. He's hoping for finalizing it before August of next year.

Barton says best case scenario is it's passed in 2 weeks, realistically it's passed within a year
he seems ridiculously confident but of course he was speaking to a room full of poker players at the WSOP
I agree to a point.
I would imagine that the big name B&M's have been throwing a ton of $$$ to get this thing moving (why else would they get a monopoly for the first 2 years) and aren't about to fumble on the 1 yd line.
We may see congress act relatively quickly, but then again, I may win this year's main event without ever leaving Houston. :D
