Set Value
I am just curious if anyone can help me figure out what is set value and how do you calculate it. I am pretty sure it is a positive return to call with a small poket pair to get a positive return on your investment. But how do you calculate it and also is it just used in tourn play or can it be applied to ring games as well. Thanks

As far as the EV math of calling a preflop raise with your plan being to hit a set and get value goes this is what you're looking for:

The key thing to remember about the advice in that thread is that you need to have enough money left in both stacks that you think you can get into the pot when you hit your set. You have to be realistic about how much implied odds you give yourself based on the villain's tendencies, your image, and your position, the thought process is more than just "1 dollar raise he has 20 in his stack so I call".
And yes it absolutely applies to ring games as well as tournaments.
Edit: Check beginner's digest next time before posting also most of what you need is there in some form.
