Anyone know anything about importing goods from Thailand/asia? Thinking of starting up a business. Anyone any experience of this? Recommend any websites with info?
I know it's a long shot, but seems silly not to ask.

Any specifics? I have a friend who worked in shipping for about 10 years and so may have some useful info if you can let me know what you're after.
I actually have a couple friends who do this. I don't really know anything about the specifics other than that they import scarves, jewelry, and other trinket type stuff. I think they make a decent profit but they are both pretty secretive about the business. (Not in an illegal sense though :P)
I used to work in the import/export business. Latex and latex-related products.
That's the gist of what I intend to do, but also ornaments, furniture, general hippy shit for the home really.
The idea is this business should justify me travelling around Asia for 3 months each year with the goal of finding things to sell, planning import routes & building relationships with suppiers whilst also having a dam good time travelling. Sounds great in theory.

Are you in the US?I recently went to a SBA seminar about starting a small business. They basically said that anyone interested in import/export could actually recieve funds from the feds to help aide in the process in both directions.I don't remember the details cuz I wasn't there for that but I remember it sounding pretty lucrative.I'd suggest contacting the SBA and prolly taking their first start up seminar.I think it cost like $30.

I dunno about the UK, but here if your revenue is over a certain threshold you have to start paying GST (our equivalent of VAT) and, at least in my small understanding, pretty much the only way that the asian parallel importers flooding trademe (our equivalent of ebay) are profitable is by neglecting to pay this tax.
Again, I don't know how accurate any of this is (or if it applies at all to the UK) but I know my brother was thinking of doing it with cellphones for a while and concluded it could be profitable or 100% legal, but not both.
I have some experience. The regulations will obv be different in the UK but you'll need to find out the tariff classifications of the products you are interested in and see if there are import duties on them...even if there isnt you'll probably need to keep record of them.
Also you need to clear customs before the goods reach your port so make sure your suppliers give you:
1) country of origin
2) value of goods (probably in your base currency)
3) Shipping manifest.
Using a customs broker makes it much easier to import shit. You have to pay, but it eleviates lots of headaches.
I want to quote your post in my blog. It can?
