Lost with top set (2NL)

Hi everybody. I'm not new to the forum but i don't post much actually because i don't feel like i'm qualified enough to comment on the hands and i can find answers to all my question in previous posts. But in this hand, i really feel i'm lost. So i decided to ask for advice...

Villain in this hand plays 56/7 (~150 hands)... A very loose and passive guy.

3 folds, Hero bets $0.07, 1 fold, CO calls $0.07, 2 folds, BB calls $0.05

Flop: ($0.22) 9s, 10h, 7h (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.15, 1 fold, BB calls $0.15

His range is so wide here since he calls almost always from the BB

Turn: ($0.52) Js (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.30, BB raises $0.70, Hero calls $0.40

This check raise scares the shit out of me because the guys aggression is 1 for the turn and this is the first time i see him check-raising. His range is 2pair+ and mostly sets and str8 i guess. I don't think that he is check raising his draws but even if he is then this turn card gives him many more outs if not allready completed. Whatever, i have top set and 10 outs, don't i...

River: ($1.92) 2s (2 players)
BB bets $1.92, Hero feels like shit

Does he ever have any bluffs in his range? I feel so bad about folding the top set against a 56/7 guy...

I need some advice. Especially, i'll be glad to hear your opinions about my bet sizing...

Seems fine. Although betting a bit larger is fine. On the turn when he c/raises so small, you have to call given your implied odds to fill up on the river, and the fact this guy will never fold a straight on the river.

As far as his range, he might c/r the turn with two pair, worse sets, however, I think that's a bit optimistic. He's likely to c/r the flop with 77/99/TT/T9/J8/86, and if not, he's probably not going to come out for a c/r when the board puts 4 to a straight on the board. Same goes for the other two pair combos (JT, J9, etc). His c/r range on the turn seems pretty polarized towards 8x, KQ type hands.

As I said, even against that range you have the pot odds/implied odds to call to make a full house. On the river, meh, I don't love folding sets to such terrible players, but his line does seem like a straight. His river bet size makes his range very polarized, meaning he surely isn't betting a worse made hands for value (I wouldn't think), so his range is either the nuts (8x, KQ, flush) or air. Given he is likely has 70+ combos of value hands in his range (KQ/98/T8/87/85/As8s/AsTs, which is 70 combos, but he could very well have more [or less]), I don't think he's bluffing often enough to make the river a call.

As a side note, you still make money here because of your implied odds on the turn.

That is pretty telling in itself. This is very uncharacteristic for a passive player. Because of this the river becomes even more of a fold.

Alas, welcome to the forum, and very well thought out thread. Organizing the thread well, and including your own analysis, is something many new players fail to do. Which inevitably leads to less learning and more flaming.

Also, regarding your reasoning for not being very active on the forums, thinking such as this can halt the improving process. Whether you feel qualified to comment on posts/threads isn't the requirement. You will benefit just as much from giving incorrect advice, and being corrected, as the OP of the thread would benefit from you giving correct advice. Poker is never 100% cut/dry, and it's because of this debates about certain decisions are good. You being another well thought out side to the debate can not hurt in any way, even if your side ends up incorrect.

Ditto stacks ... Great post, great response. If a player makes a move that varies dramatically from his stats I am pretty quick to fold. I will accept a few bluffs on me rather then being right about them and handing them my money.
