Eff me WTF is the no lan BS with SC2 anyway?
I laughed a lot on the latency commentQuote:

If it really was a make or break thing, they probably could jam it in pretty quick. That said, I doubt they ship with it in.
I don't follow your incredible insight and brilliance, fnord. Saying it was a big issue 2 years ago inside blizzard means nothing to anyone outisde of blizzard. That's like my grandfather rickrolling me as I tell him "welcome to 2006."
It'd be cooler if you told us why the blizzard decided to not include something so explicitely expected as LAN play. Becuase speculation leads us to assume that all living entites of blizzard are nothing but warped minds and lost souls, the playthings of corporate greed.
Control basically.
If you go through a central service it's easier to provide and evolve the best possible experience (for example, there are big plans around how to manage maps), police games and collect a fair price from every player.
Thinking about it from their POV I cant wrap my mind around it. I just think Id rather please my gamers through and through and move on to the next thing. When you're blizzard and you make a perfect game, the rest works itself out, right?
Even on the approach its such an unsavory thought making a less pleasing game in favor of "control" and what i can only imagine is their attempt to try and make SC2 a WoW calibur income stream.
I guess when I imagine being Blizzard, I think of myself as a really rich gamer doing what I loved when they probably operate as a money making machine looking to make some money while having fun making money.
So many features so little time and the game is already how many YEARS late??? Blizzard doesn't believe in just throwing in crappy features to fill a check box. Hence the focus on a single, highest quality online experience. They are putting a HUGE amount of engineering effort behind the new Battle.net.Quote:

It's really such a niche market if it wasn't for the hordes of people who will buy it for a couple play throughs for the sake of the brand. Also, Blizzard is really sensitive about not milking their customers to maximize short-term revenue. That said, Blizzard is a buisness and if you like and play their product they expect you to pay a fair price. I always felt bad for the SC2 guys because they just can't have the same financial impact on the buisness as other departments. It's better for both customers and the buisness to force you to have an account with an online service rather than some voodoo CD copy protection with driver issues and a zero day crack.Quote:

I guess if i had to choose, perfecting the battle.net experience would be huge and letting LAN-needs piggy back on battle.net services would be acceptable.
Its much cooler when you can talk about the inner workings of blizzard
edit also blizzard expecting people to pay a fair price for services rendered. I bet my opinion of fair price is unrealistic in this day and age
1) makes no sense, it's bs
2) over/under on how long it takes someone to
a) crack the game and
b) write an emulator for battle.net to allow lan
3) ...
4) profit??@?!?!!?
LOLOLOLOLOLOL so many things wrong with this.Quote:

and I thought I posted this in here yesterday, but I guess not.. I found a copy of the d2 sound track (guess I bought the collectors edition?) the other day. I listened to it last night while working on my motorcycle. It was pretty awesome.
Lan isn't necessarily outdated YET, but it will be soon, and it's probably a good idea to be ahead of the curve. There are still some problems for the players due to no lan, but that type of thing is unavoidable. Also, Blizzard is by far the best game developers on the planet. This suggests that they probably know what they're doing
Question for Fnord: will this affect professional gaming in South Korea at all? I'm assuming that there will be enough safeguards and backups on bnet that in case it goes down during a professional match, the game will not be lost and will only have to be paused for a couple minutes. Is this correct?
And I'm a huge fan of esports, I can't wait for SC2 to take off in South Korea.
Leaked battle report. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_0MYFcwpWg
Naah, it won't affect professional gaming in SK.
The trick is that either Blizz will sell the server protocall to the professional gaming industry like others have,
or
Some hacker will create a server that emulates the B.net server, and they'll just use that.
The idea of "patching the game so that b.net allows lan" is just ludicris. I honestly think it's the highest error to word ratio ever.
ya I would guess that a pretty decent revenue stream would be created by simply licensing the protocol to e-sport outfits. Its also an a great way to make more money and not tax the player.
I saved this for later thinking it was a serious battle report, but even though it isnt, it is hilarious so Im not disappointed.Quote:

It's going to have a LAN hack like the first day it's out. Fuck it, I AM MAKING A LAN HACK. I will code one myself if Blizzard doesn't release it. Fuck your control shit, you're never going to have it. It's just not reasonable. This isn't fucking WoW. You can't expect everyone to play on your shitty servers. This game is about single iterations of play, it's not a fucking MMORPG.
This. Plus internet lag.Quote:

this could be the nerdiest thing i have ever read, although "nigger speed" did spice it up a little.Quote:
