No reads, it was 2nd hand of match. My thinking behind it was, so many combo draws it would be profitable to ship. I had flush draw/str8 draw/str8 flush draw/coulda caught a jack for more outs with a queen. Felt it was profitable. I do not know, please let me know. :D

Preflop: Open limping is never good. Pretty much always raise or fold.

Flop: By overraising, you will scare away nearly every hand except the ones that are already (way) ahead of you. By just calling, plenty more hands will continue and possibly pay you off if you hit your draw.

Justin.. Few things here. First off with forum etiquette just to keep you on track. Generally posting results will deter from both the amount of responses you get, and the quality of such responses. If people know the outcome, such as what villain had, whether your draw got there or not, etc, it could very likely sway their opinion in some manner. So generally, if you are posting a hand history in which you want advice, it's best to leave out the results. Actually it's best to leave out every action after the action you wanted to discuss. So in this example, you would remove all action after you shoved allin on the flop (as I have done for you in the original post).

Now regarding your play.

Preflop - don't open limp here. Open limping is generally a poor strategy. From the CO in a 6m game, 98s is most definitely an open, so open for your standard 4xbb + 1bb (or more likely 3-3.5xbb + 1bb at 6m). Not only do you have the opportunity to pick up the blinds that you don't have when you open limp, you also create quite a few more profitable situations postflop, where you can cbet and take it down, have a bigger pot for when you hit, etc. Also, if good players are acting behind you, then they should be isolating limps often, in which case you will be playing 98s OOP, which is less than ideal.

Flop - Well.. I'm never in this situation because I wouldn't have limp/called preflop. I wouldn't check/shove that's for sure. However, I would likely check/raise/call. If he figure he stacks off with TT+, 76, AT, AsXs, KsQs, KsJs, then we have ~33% equity against his range. Given the fold equity our check/raise has, and the odds we will be given after we raise (if he shoves) a call will be correct.

So on the flop (as played) I check/raise to like $2.75, and call when/if he shoves.

Oh.. My reasoning for not check/shoving is basically balance purposes. I wouldn't check/shove if I had any sort of monster made hand, so it stands to reason that I shouldn't check/shove my draws here. Also, I doubt a shove adds any bit of extra fold equity.

If your goal was to make villian fold, it would have worked on me unless I had trips or better. Absent any reads, I fold marginal hands to check raises.

Typically at this level, a check raise means you have a great hand and it will probably scare away hands that might call bets on the turn and river.

I do 3x in the CO/BU, and 4x from MP/EP
I agree on not c/shoving because to someone who can hand-read it DECREASES our fold equity
