did i do the right thing?

I'm just starting to play cash games.Had been playing 6 max $0.01/0.02 NL on pokerstars the other night and had got my 3$ up to 5$ when a new guy joined the table . First hand I had KJo and he immediately raised it to $0.2. I called the flop and completely missed but he raised it to $0.4. I folded as I didn#t want to blow my winnings in one hand hoping. H did the same two or three times out of the next 5 hands which i'd folded anyway , so I got up and left.
question is did i do right leaving the table? . if i had hit on a future hand it would be potentially profitable, but as his bets were so large relative to the blinds , people were folding before it would get to showdown to find out what his ranges potentially were. It felt like being in the first few hands of a freeroll, more of a crap shoot than playing poker.

Do you have a bankroll? Do you know what bankroll management is?

If you answered yes to those questions, then you should've stayed at the table.

Chris is right but I'll add one thing. If the big raiser is to my right, I'll sit there and nit up until I have some value, then I'll call/raise him, whatever looks profitable (raise, obviously, if he seems to call a big raise).

If the big raiser in on my left, I'm inclined to leave unless he's horrible. If he makes a big raise forcing me to fold my medium strength opening hands too often, it's not profitable to stay unless he's stacking off with T9o and such.

But yeah, if he's one or two seats to my right, I just nit up and wait for a big hand (88+, AQ+, KQ) to value town him. Just know that he'll invariably show up with KK the first time you try it or suck out on you with K9s, so you need a bankroll that can withstand some "bad news." But over a hundred hands, you can get into 4 or 5 big pots where you have him dominated, and that's ++++EV.

In terms of bank roll , I have $87.71 on poker stars at the moment which has mainly occurred because i was invited into two freerolls back in the summer (i think it was for people who had signed up but not deposited ) and i finished 2nd in the one and 27th in the other.
William Hill is where i have been playing most of my freerolls and have about £100 on it .......£50 of that came from a PLO freeroll in a magazine series of tournaments where i finished in 4th.(this is the only account i think i can cash out of having made a deposit of £2 in order to set the account up.
$70 on pitbull built up from the initial free $10 when i signed up in freeroll wins.
£4 on VCpoker

bit of background, Set myself a self imposed rule of not putting personal cash into poker sites so that i don't get to the stage of chasing losses . Therefore been playing the freerolls and trying to build a bankroll that way.The fact that i won't be putting money into sites means that i have been very protecytive of what i have made so that i can have sufficient funds at the start to try and manage my bankroll.
I usually have 3 or 4 freeroll tables playing at onceand cash fairly regularly.
Tonight , I won the PL omaha freeroll on pacific for $11.50 cashed in a $100 free roll for 40 cents and cashed on william hill freeroll for 30 cents.

so essentially in terms of freeroll poker , I would be looking to get high pocket pairs AK AQ AJ AT and possibly KQ to take him on with, knowing that a certain percentage of the time i'd be up against a bad beat but usually would be doubling up or would wait for the next freeroll to come along.
what freaked me out slightly in this situation was
1. had no read on the guy initially
2. very little experience of NL cash game to fall back on
3. have been grinding VC poker up on full ring limit .01/.02 and very wary of bad beats resulting from that .
4. that his bets and raises were so high relative to the blinds.
