Operation: Life Improvement

I have been around here for a long time, I have made serious operation threads and never followed through. This is a serious operation thread I hope to follow through on.

Poker presents an amazing opportunity to myself that I am wasting. I have free time I am wasting at this point in my life, wasting a lot of it. In the future I will never have that kinda time that I have now. I also have a big ego, I am very smart and very competitive I HATE to lose and love to win. It is time I put all the thing I have going for me to work.

It is time to make a very serious run at poker. How much money have I lost not playing very seriously and being stuck at 10nl for how many god awful months it is embarrassing. I could have been moving up and making serious money at higher limits and IMPROVING my quality of life through poker earnings.

Right now my poker account sits at $300 after withdrawing some money from it to play live and some other things.

Short Term Goals:
Play 10nl Full Ring (which I know I can beat at a decent bb/100) put in the hours.
I do enjoy MTTs so fire up a $2 or $3 MTT while I am playing my cash games, but not waste 2-3 hours playing a MTT solely while browsing the web that is not poker that is wasting time.
Move up to 25nl slowly once I am rolled for it a few tables at a time.
Discuss poker with guys in IRC and on Forums, gain insight that will help me rather than just mess around in commune.

Long Term Goals:
Keep moving up in limits at my own pace following good bankroll management.
Never bust my bank roll.
Make money so that I can live a more comfortable less stressful life.


Please do bust my balls in IRC through PM or AIM if I am not updating this daily or living up to my potential. I am serious about this. I may go a few days due to school etc but I do not want to give up.

played a little 45 min session 6tables.
I need to figure out my standard opening ranges. I am starting to open up which I love.

Opening up gives you a much better opportunity to steal from the nits and get paid off when you did hit big.

Also playing like such a nit slows down pretty much any growth of post flop game.

My weakest areas are probably blind play, small suited connectors and small pocket pairs(I think I limp to much), and lastly not thinking post flop (I put so much thought into my preflop game putting people on hands but do not put nearly as much thought into post flop ranges).
Any comments on those above issues or anything is always welcome.

Postflop ranges are just a logical continuation of preflop ranges. Whatever range you put them on preflop, you just take out the hands from that range that no longer make sense with their postflop play.

played only a few minutes today, had a few short stack hit and runs my tables kept breaking up and I have to get up early for class tomorrow. Looking to put in a big big session tomorrow.

For the sake of honesty:
Well I dropped $140 last night playing live so I guess no more playing live for a bit. But table selection IMO. So no more live for a long long time (unless my roomate stakes me maybe)

I have been enjoying poker more than ever lately. Playing the player is so much more rewarding than playing your own cards.

My focus has been twice as good as it has ever been.

Using my HUD effectively makes my game so much better. Putting every villain I see regardless if I am playing in the hand on a range and being right a lot feels better than actually even winning.

Instead of acting like a robot and deciding to play a pot based on my hand I decide to play a pot based on what I think my opponent is playing.

This hand I feel like is a good example. From what I had seen of villians cont betting habits and other betting habits. I was pretty sure he did not have an Ace here. Also I was pretty sure he was folding if I did bet because he was scared of the ace. So me betting behind I was sure he was going to fold. And if a non scare card hit on turn and he bet I was going to raise. And sure enough it worked out. And I felt pretty damn satisfied.

I am a BRM disciple. the 1/2 live excursion was more have a have fun kinda thing.

And yeah the kirby thing was from me leaving FTR logged on on a friends comp with me having avs/sigs turned off so I didn't notice it for the longest time, and have been to lazy to change it.

dropped a 25lbs bench press plate on my bare foot yesterday, was sliding it off the bar and just dropped it. Went to the er because it looked like there was a golf ball size bruise on my foot and it looked pretty bad. Ended up not being broke but I got some vicodin so no poker while I am under the influence today.

thinking about jumping over to 6 max 10nl, had a pretty subpar session last night. Lately my big hands have no got paid off at all.

Just trying to get something jump started. I killed 5nl 6 max for 18 ptbb/100 over 6k+ hands. So lets see if I can do the same at 10 nl 6max.

Ok so first little session of 6max went good, had 5 tables up while I was playing a little tourney. Beat it pretty well.

I think I may enjoy it more because it is easier to pick on bad players. There is also a lot more 3 betting preflop leading to donks paying off post flop for poor decisions preflop.

Woulda ended up +25 but ran KK into AA with 150bb. But finished up a little over a buyin so good start. Probably going to play another session tonight.

Only like 30 hands on opponent but I was pretty sure he was terrible.

Poker is not comfortable, and as you said your swinging up and down the limits. You cant count on poker getting you a better life, there is so many people that think that. Yeah you beat NL10, what does that give you? 9-18$ per hour 9 tabling, thats nothing! You cant take a loan playing poker? How are you planning on getting a house or car? And do you know how stressfull it is? Overall good people win NL100 -200 with 2BB/100. Do you know what it feels like having a 100k breakeven graph? Well this happends at higher limits, even tho your a "winning player" and tbh beating the game 2BB/100 over 100k hands, im not even sure im a winning player.

Do not fall into the trap that your gonna have a good life playing poker, because your not. Trust me, poker is fail =) Get yourself the education you need, get good money and play poker outside of it, then you can make money. You need the loan and everything for your house, you dont win millions right away so you can buy yourself a house =)

Nice little quick session I think I might prefer playing a few 45 minute sessions with breaks rather than trying to play a 2 hour session and losing focus.

Finished up a little more than a buy in playing 6max.

So a great first night at 6 max.

ZwiFT: I have no allusions of making a shit ton of money instantly. I am a full time student right now, with a shitty part time job. I have always worked.

Just poker does represent an opportunity to be have and possibly if I figure it out make some extra cash to enjoy some things I may not be able to enjoy.

I totally understand where you are coming from, but even being able to play 100nl grinding out 2bb/100 while having fun (while I have a job etc) thats a few hundred dollars I could have a month to either keep in a bankroll or go out and have some fun when I normally couldn't.

Or I could be the .0001% who works hard something clicks and goes and beats 10000nl and owns life. Never know!

Mini sessions are the way to go right now, keep up my focus and hop on and off whenever I want no feeling like I need to stay on for some reason.

6max is fun, I need to get my pfraise% up inline with my VP$IP, calling to many pf raises with suited connectors and small pairs when I should be 3betting/folding depending on the player.

Had two good sessions and two pretty bad sessions today.

Had AA < KK and a set over set today both deepstacked which hurt a lot.

I think I need to work on calming down and sticking to my game when I am not hitting like I should be and not trying to force anything.

I think I try to force it to much and spew a lot of money trying to hit my draws and force people out of pots.

Self control and patience, self control and patience.

Hmmmm so I think working out just a little bit before playing clears up a lot of my "nervous" energy that makes me want to FORCE the game.

New goal just doing a few sets of like curls, pushups or crunches before I sit down to play a session.

Big Discussion with the guys on IRC, it is time to fix my game. My awful awful game.

Switched back to full ring and have been playing off rentons SS holdem posts (amazing all poker players especially small stakers should check em out)

And reading a lot of Spoons and other peoples stuff there is so much good info out there to read and reread.

My biggest problem was I kinda knew what was wrong but did not think it was really costing me as much as it was.

Ok I tightened up my limp range a ton, opened up my raise range.

Been playing really good poker (at least for me) the excerise thing helps me clams me down a ton.

Gona try to get some BR tallying in here and post some hands (if anyone reads this) to talk about.

Hopefully by October be playing 25nl.

This guy was a loose passive 30/2 I shoudla bet more on turn ($2.0), but I think the river was a good example of a blocking bet. I think I would have probably raised him there but was pretty surprised by his lead out. Even though the river was a blank.

No hands on villain here but I played it pretty bad IMO. I just called on flop planning to raise on turn, but when he checked I bet to small (LEAK LEAK LEAK will focus on this next session) should have bet river larger too (I used to bet to big now I bet to small wtf) and have a hard choice on river. If I had bet more on turn and river it is an easier call to make. Check raises usually show a ton of strength in 10nl but I was getting 1-4 on my money. he could have a 6 or 44 mayeb AT but I think a lot more he has an Ace.

Played my longest cash session ever while playing the 2k gurantee, about 4 hours 7-8 tabling. Started out slow with nothing happening, but I stayed composed and didnt force anything and lose more money than I needed to. Ended up pretty good, I nailed a guy with a set over set and made some good value bets.

Came in 101st in the 2k, for a whoooping gain OF $3

Pretty brutal session almost 1k hand session. Could not make a hand and every time I got TPTK or two pair people drew out.

-2 Buyin session, hopefully put in another tonight.

I wish sessions were like win 4bb/100 everytime, not like today I had one session were I played 1k hands dropped two buysin, played about 400 hands a little bit ago and made it all back pretty much.

Played pretty well today

Got to the final 3 tables of a $5 FO with 1k people, but couldn't catch any cards. So I only made $15 for 4 hours of work (donkaments)

Pretty close to 25nl depending on how tomorrows session goes I might move up next week.

I do have a test wednesday i need to study for though.

Ugh donkaments love them and hate them, got 400th in the 5k guarantee with 5.4k entrants. AK vs 88 pf I win the flip and go deep but oh well.

Been studying doubtful I will get much play time in this week since I have a test Wednesday in Insects and a take home test for Molecular Biology of the Gene (which is so over my head)

I got a decision though, I will be going home to watch my dog while my parents are away from the 9th-12th, do I want to withdraw $100 from Stars to play live at a charity place near there that offer .5/1? And have to spend a few more weeks working up to 25nl again? Best case scenario is I get done with all my school work and am able to win 4-5 buyins at 25nl and withdraw $100 and still be rolled for $25nl.

Going to start playing half $10nl half $25nl whenever I get a chance to play again and see how that goes.

Won $265 today at a local card room back home. I thought it was gona be .5/1 so I only brought $100. I got in 2 big hands early.
a few people limped in the BB I got AT(I just checked since I knew I would probably get 2 callers if I raised and did not really want to cont bet there or what not) flop came KJ8, it checks around I check. turn is a Q, I bet ~12, guys with about $150 when hand started makes it ~30, I shove he turns over 9T. So I double up to about $180.

A little bit later pretty agressive kid with a big stack comes back to the table. I get 22 in SB, I call a raise from MP and agressive kids gets in too. Flop comes 872, I check, agressive kid raises, mp goes all in for about 50, I fake think fake think and call. I was kinda nervous here, was cared of a over set (I shouldnt be but hey $200 is a lot to me) I check a 4 turn, he looks at me and checks. river comes a 2 and I think ohhh fuck yes I am about to get paid here I have about $140 left and other kid has a lot. I throw out $20 because if he has the house he is getting it all in and if he has something less I think he will call. He throws it away and shows a K9, other guy mucked. I didnt need the quads to win the hand but still pretty cool.

Also I made a dumb dumb play, I had KT and raised in BB or SB and was HU against the agrressive kid OOP, flop came K67, I check and he thorws out $15,I wanted to keep it small because I thought he might have a lower pair but kinda thought he might have a K there too so I just call, turn was 9, I check he throws out $20 I call, river is an 8 and I insta check(on accident), he turns over KQ and I turn over my runnner runner straight like some donk asshole. In my defense I had a long day and drove 2.5 hours to get home.
Only other memorable hands, like 5th hand since I got there in MP kid to my left seemed pretty aggro, made it 8, I look down at AA make it 25 and he thought a logn time and mucked.

In BB had a few limpers I look down at AJ and raise, comes to SB who tanks for like a min then mucks, I go to muck and see guy in MP had called really fast on me, and stopped just in time, flop came like 469 I bet he folded but my image was so bad after this plus the KT hand.

When I left I was like nice playing with you guys and I got like 10 steps away and heard them all bitching about flopping uts every hand... :roll:


But yeah happy day.

Might go check out one of the detroit casinos or maybe windsor see if they got any 1/2 going.

Been in a funk with cash games, I do not know what is wrong with my cash game and sadly do not have time to fix it right now. I know I am a winning number and kinda (not huge but decent sample size) to show it but lately I just pendulum back and forth.

School is really busy now and will be until this semester ends, in December I do not think I will be working so I will have almost all of December to play and work on my game.

Till then I think I am just going to play SnGs/Cash if I feel like it. I can sit down and play a few sets of snGs a week and still get my poker fix.

10+1s: 12 played, ITM% 50, ROI 29.9%
5+.5s: 17 played, ITM 47%, ROI 25%

Finishes: 4 1st, 5 2nd, 5 3rd

Need to try to read some SnG strategy if I have time.

Pretty much what I am doing know is playing for 3rd and once I get ITM playing for first.
