$5 - 3 handed...do you call or push here?

Original raiser is a pretty tight player so probably has something in the neighborhood of 66+, A9+. Do you push and risk losing him in the hand and get HU against short stack or do you call and hope the flop doesn't have an ace or king?

I reshove all of the time here. Remember that button will be worried about what YOU have since if he calls your shove and loses he will be pretty much out in 3rd. There are only two hands you really fear since you've got the right end of a flip against AK, and he calls your shove with a bunch of hands you beat as well.

I'd raise because him calling and him folding are both good results. He isn't a huge dog with an over Ax given how much money is in there. And there is dead money even if SB hits.

OTOH you folding the best hand, or losing the hand to something like A2 that he would have folded, are both disasters.

If he has a PP, you're much more likely to get his stack pre flop.

You're pretty much committed no matter what comes. You'll have one PSB left on the flop if you just call. If he does have something in the range you give him he's probably calling anyway.
But I doubt that that's really his range... it should be much wider.

What I am wondering is why he 3x instead of just pushing? I would be worried about AA,KK here. The small blind isn't really that big of a deal. You could always CC and check down to the river. If he has AA, KK, he'd fire out on the flop. If he has AK, AQ, he'll most likely check to try and knock out the SB.

The other reason he might make it 3x instead of pushing is that he's worried about Hero waking up with a hand and (effectively) busting him in 3rd place. NO way can you put him on AA or KK exclusively here. I think calling is really really bad here, as drmcboy said, losing the hand to Ax which would have either folded or called as a dog or folding the best hand on the flop is a disaster.

with SB calling,if he is out and you are out,you still get 2nd place.

I don't think he has any doubt that he's ahead, he's just asking if he should trap the button. But I think the button is more likely to call here with Ax then he is on the flop when he hit his 8 kicker.

This is pot committed to you? No, re-evaluate. This would leave PLENTY of chips to fold an A-K-x flop. You're definitely, 100%, not pot-commited by calling preflop here, lol.

Although it's possible this can be the case, 3-handed you need to take this risk. Typically this sort of raise at this level is just what the person thinks is a standard "blind steal". Re-shoving this all day long and never even thinking twice about it. You're 3 HANDED!!!! If you run into AA/KK, oh well.

If he calls with Ax, great! We're ahead, that's what we wanted. We got our opponent to commit all of their chips on a 3-outter. What else do you want?

I wasn't saying that I would just CC. I'm pushing here all day. I was playing devils advocate and trying to shed light on another some what probable scenario. I think its a case of risk VS reward. Best case is button calls your AI with Ax and misses. You now have a monster stack HU.
