What's a fish?

I have read bits and pieces referring to fishes, I used to think it meant new players - but think i'm off the mark with that.

if you cant spot the fish its normally you.

I've googled - the term. Not usualy a fan of doing that because you never know the quality of the definition.

But I've landed on this: -

Poker - Fish.
Definition: A bad or weak poker player. A sucker.

Is it as simple as that? :)

indeed it is, though as you move up the limits and the games get harder even half decent players become 'fish'.

Yea it's that simple, a bad player(fish) is the exact opposite of a good player(shark). Both on contrary extremes of the oceanic food chain. Following? villain had AT and didn't improve. He got his stack up to $300 again, but I only got another $40 out of him before he went busto

dunno, think I stack off regardless. This was a 200bb max-buy-in table, so if I lost I'd look at his hand and then probably rebuy 200 deep vs this whale

40/35
40 is vpip - % of times villain voluntarily put money in pot
35 is pft - % of times villain raised pre-flop

Just to give you a quick answer lucky. The numbers Daven stated (40/35) is a players VP$IP, and his PFR, respectively.

VP$IP - Voluntarily Put Money Into Pot: Anytime a player puts money into the pot without being forced (aka blinds) it adds to this stat.

PFR - Preflop Raise: How often a player raises preflop.

Therefore, as daven villians stats indicate, he plays 40% of hands, raising 35% of those hands and limping 5%.

These stats are offered with programs called HUDs (Head's Up Display), which are found in programs like PT3, HEM, PA HUD. The stats help determine players tendencies and act as reads in some cases. Just by looking at those stats, daven could conclude that the player was playing way too many hands preflop, therefore his range on the flop wasn't as tight as other players.
