Table selection Video

Hey guys. X-man just put up a video of me playing two tables of $25NL and talking a lot about table and seat selection. Here's the link.

it's not as much playing as some vids, but a lot of discussion about Hud stats, where to sit, and why not to sit at certain tables. Let me know if you want anything else. I can do it by Friday and X can put it up on the weekend. Keep in mind, Spenda is doing a series on micro, so don't ask for anything he's going to do already. I can go as high as $50NL but would prefer to stick to the lower stakes for the vids. I don't think there are many $50NL players that would learn much from me since I'm only breaking into $200NL now.

If nobody has any suggestions, I will do a step up Vid of $5NL and $25NL and talk about the differences or lack thereof between the two stakes, and what it takes to grind through them, while having one table of each on the screen.

The step-up vid sounds dope. I've created my own $5NL at UB since they don't have one (don't ask.... it's complicated and mostly just in my head...). Will be at the $10NL for a while, but getting a sense of how I'm going to have to adjust will be most excellent...

what is a step-up video?

Thx TJ for making the video. I just moved up to 25nl and have never used PA HUD before so the video is a good way for me to start learning to use PA HUD.

Could you explain the hand with TT again, please? I did not understand the thought process when you conclude that you were ahead when calling the AI.

Thanks for the video. I followed the advice on table selection on my last session. I was sitting at a couple of tight tables where I would have sat for the entire session. But following tips from the video I was browsing other tables to move to which I have not done before.
I found a looser table with a couple of fishy players and proceeded to lose 2.5 buy-ins when my aces or kings were cracked by J9, 63 and 57. I could have easily been 2.5 buy-ins up as my money was in as favorite. I am definitely table hopping if required in future. Thanks again for the vid.

Thanks Shifubowa, nice to hear things are getting through. You always wonder if people watch and actually use or attempt to use the thoughts and ideas you try to give. Your attitude about the beats is the best way to think about this game if your in it for the long haul.

Bizu, As played the conversation went like this. First I claim that he seems tight. I only have 8 hands on him but he has played only one. So the stats aren't reliable but a little telling. As stated in the video, I don't have many stats on players at this level so with a grain of salt, I was going to use what I had as a means of making my points on thoughts and reads throughout the vid, as it was a seat and table selection video based on stats on the hud. Basically, playing one of eight hand we know he's not going to be a 55%vpip, and that's all we know. I raise his limp from the CO out of the SB to 6BB and he just calls.We flop an overpair w/TT on a 724r flop. First thing I think is what does he have. I said that he didn't RR me so I can't think that he has AA, KK, QQ or JJ. But what does he limp call with? PP's 22-99, TT is unlikely and unimportant since we also have TT and maybe Axs and any two broadways, + 5% or so random hands. I C bet $4.25 into a $5 pot expecting him to shut down on this board. He snap 3bets me. My first thought is he hit something, but he only min raised me from $4.55 to $9. I think about it a bit and come to the conclusion that he never thought about it and is just making a play based on my ranges. Of all the hands I can put him on only 3 have me beat 77, 22, 44 but most sets don't min raise here, they either 3 bet big or wait till the turn at this level. We are way ahead still in most cases. So his range now is still 2 broadwyas, Axs where he may have hit the kicker and PP's 33, 55, 66, 88, 99 since we still don't give him credit for the set. On the turn ( 5s ) I decide I'm going to try and get it all in since I think I'm ahead still of his everything in his range except 55. When he shoves, I figure either I missed my read or he's bluffing since I only called his RR on the flop and he thinks I don't have a hand either. It's now $13 for me to call into a $34.50 pot with an overpair that's crushing all the hands I put him on except 55. I call and it played out as I expected.

It's really important to start getting your opponent on a range of hands as early as possible. This is one of the things I am still learning to do. It's been said before that if you are a great hand reader, nothing else in poker will be hard to do, since you will always be able to accurately put your opponents on a narrow range of hands. Making mistakes will be much more difficult.

Yea, it was the timing of that raise on the flop that made me think he was just planning to do it, and you wouldn't do that with a set.

I tried using HUD for the first time today. The numbers were a bit distracting so now I only use vpip/pfr/af/no. hands for now.

What's a good number for Table VPIP after playing about 50-100 hands to justify us to stay at the table?

I shoot for 40%. You will hardly find that if you play in the States, but you can find them. Under 23%-25% is not good, but I will stay if I have the right seat to the left of a looser player with a full stack and a couple real nits to the left. I just won't try for big pots without monster hands. Shoot for raisiong pre and Cbets then take as many as you can till they play back.

Sorry for commenting on this video almost a year after it's been made, but just got around to watching some more of these vids and this one seems pretty good so far (haven't quite finished yet).

Not sure if this was added after you made the video, but if you right click the filters in the lobby you can sort it by up to three things. This makes it a lot easier to table select than the way you described, allowing you to sort by Stakes, Players/Flop, and Avg. Pot. Since this vid was focussed on table selection, it's important to note that individual players' stats are almost more important than table stats. Even though you can't do it on PokerStars and it's not really necessary at 25NL, you'll certainly find it's much more profitable to datamine for like 30 minutes before you play a session.

As for the actual hands played during the video, you seem somewhat nitty preflop, but I guess you explain this by saying that it's because you don't have a ton of hands on your opponents. Also, your standard raise is 4x, but why do you sometimes keep it at 4x after a limper? Is this just because the limpers are often short so you want to keep the pot smaller? TT hand seems somewhat standard, he might have a bit too much behind him though to just call in that spot (can't exactly remember his stack at the time though), I think you might have to fold or shove here, I guess calling worked out though.

Great video though, definitely learned some stuff from it.

I was probably nittier than usual, since I spent so much time talking about table and player stats for table selection. I do sometimes not add the BB to a preflop bet against shorter stacks for many reasons. You seem to have answered a lot of your own questions so thanks. As for strat vids there are better ones. I was thinking about doing a micro stakes series this summer, it's up in the air. I had a list of BR building, beginning concepts and strats I was going to cover for Grinderschool but I may just do them and post them here.
