I often play a flopped set (that's what you are trying to represent?) with this line precisely if the board has draws(usually 3-bet pots), and it's almost always called down if the "draws" miss. In a 2-bet pot and without obvious draws, this can work better as a bluff, but I think you need to have good reads on opp.


What do you put villain on? Would villain really value bet river with AK/AQ? Your two calls are very scary on this drawless board and I certainly would not value bet top pair here. So isn't he representing at least two pair, like 89?

The more I look at it, the more it looks like villain was three barreling this time, so in a way you were lucky, or do you really think villain would fold something like two pair here? He might easily let go of AK/AQ, but then why bet that crap in the first place...

it's HU, gotta VB AK/AQ here b/c it's good such a high % of the time. you don't need to have 2p+ to 3barrell hu that's for sure...

about the play, stack sizes suggest that gabe is getting killed and that the guy may likely look this bet up with anything he was vb'ing with in the first place. Not really a big fan but it does put villain in a tough spot b/c he has to be thinking due to stack sizes that it can't be a bluff.

Shortstackers have an inherent advantage over the rest of the table. It shouldn't be very hard at all for him to be a winning player (he is) if he's halfway decent (he is).

Don't let the stacks fool you, I lost over 10BI before winning it all back in a 7-hour session that finished at 8AM. Villain ended down 3BI.

I've heard about this advantage, but I don't quite buy that it makes winning easier. Getting raped by the blinds is a huge disadvantage. Of the 50k+ hands I've played as a shortstack, I'm a big loser.

Maybe I played wrong, though. I thought I played right according to all the 'right' information, but maybe that's wrong. What are Imsakidd and Kurosh's vpip/pfr?

getting raped by the blinds is not a huge disadvantage, it's just part of the game. the advantage is that the game now has 20bb effective stacks for you ALWAYS, where the other players 1) are typically trying to play optimally for 100bb stacks, and 2) generally don't play nearly as well for 20bb effectiv even if they tried to. Some even have a horrible misconception that you can't make money shortstacking. I personally think it makes winning easier because the decisions are much simpler than in a deeper game. On the same token though these tougher, deep-stacked decisions are exactly what makes very good deeper stacked players have the ability to have a much higher win-rate than a shortstacker.

I sincerely doubt you were playing with all the 'right' information; info out there typically isn't very good for poker at all and there is even less good info out there for shortstacking. Which is actually a very good thing because good ones just make games worse. As far as their vpip's/pfr's they are probably a lot laggier (relatively) than you think, maybe 18/16 or something. That range and how you would optimally play with those stacks is far different than if you were playing deeper, though.

This is interesting cuz I remember reading about short-stacking several different times and the advice always just seemed to be wait for AA-TT/AK/AQ and push. I'd really like to see what the real short-stackers are doing.

Take a look at the shotstack vs isolator thread. A perfect example of how the shortstack gets free equity when the deepstacks raise each other out.

In a way it's a bit unfair that a deep stack has to fold to a raise, but the shortstack who is all-in doesn't (no way around it though). This is where a big part of their advantage comes from. This is also why it pays for them to be loose, because the looser they are, the more isolation plays will be done. Often the blinds will be isolated, which are a usually big relative to the short stack.

I really think that gaming sites should offer tables where it is only possible to buy in for the full amount.

Fortunately most of the short stackers are quite poor players. Even at pretty high stakes.

Everything I've read about shortstacking suggest you should be at about 10 vpip. Which is really bad. 18 vpip isn't getting raped by the blinds.

Anyways, meh. If I was good at shortstacking I wouldn't have had to spend more time figuring out deepstacking.

probably the best thing about playing full-stacked is that 90%+ of your peers don't hate you.

Why would anyone do that? There are lots of these shortstackers out there already, good thing that many of them play pretty bad. Especially at Party it's a huge problem. The easier it is for people to find out how to play a shortstack profitably, the more of them there will be out there and the better those shortstacks will be. And then all the regular players' winrate will be lower, why would we want that...

Most of the time he was getting his great hands in on the turn taking the line he took. Of course sometimes this is a T with maybe a weakish kicker or strong kicker, and sometimes its something like top set or JJ.

Considering it most of the hands he plays hes not confident hes ahead, when i checked the river intending to give up because of an aggroish image, he nearly instantly bets 2/3rds pot. I thought that with a medium hand here he actually would really have to consider whether to bet or not, but he doesnt. So I think it's either top set or a missed draw. Since there's more combos of missed draws i decide to raise.

what is your reasoning here? What does he have that you want to push him off that beats you and bets the river and will fold?

he put me on a certain range after flop c/r and turn c/c

he is above average player so he is value betting strong Qx hands here, because it thinks it beats my calling range

the river c/r is so small he should think that i think hesnot folding, so he should fold hands as strong as AA here, because afterall, why would i bluff with such a small ber

ofc after showing the a8 here i cant pull too many more of these for the rest of the session
