The poker apology

Does it make you feel better?

Yesterday I had pocket A's beaten by trip 10's..the guy said "sorry man that sucks"...didn't really make me feel any better...

In heads up recently the river gave me a straight (I had a 7 or 8 in my hand) before I even saw the opponents cards (when he called my all in) he said "sorry I've got the nutz" and it almost seemed like he meant it.

Was watching US poker championship or something recently on TV and some kid busted someone hard on the river with a one outter and the other guy was all in...kid says "I'm sorry man"...the other guy walking out said "You sure are"

That was pretty good.

It makes you feel bad, but it makes you feel so damn good. Apologizing for having the nuts is stupid though. I only feel SLIGHTLY bad for an opponent if I can count my outs on one hand.

Oh I don't...even when I'm beat I'm more a fan of the "it's poker" line than "sorry"

i don´t apologize, why should i? 90% of my decisions are made for some reason, getting right implied odds, seen villian making stupid bluffs in similar situation before etc, why should i say sorry for making the right move? the other 10% beats are results of not paying attention or being drunk, then i just feel happy that i got lucky.

if ppl say sorry tell them they shouldn´t be. we know it all evens out.

When I play live, I say sorry when I bust someone just to be polite. It's more me saying, "I'm sorry that since I busted you, you have to leave the tournament now." I do this because I like talking to people at my table, so I feel it's the right thing to say while saying bye. I never say anything online.

I hate the apologies...you're goal is to bust your opponent and anyone that apologies for doing that, wether through a suck-out or a better hand, is either incredibly disingenuous or not cut out for poker.

It doesn't quite piss me off as much though as when it's an all-in situation and players are wishing each other luck...grow some balls, be honest and admit you don't want your opponent to have any luck at all and in fact would be wishing them badluck to their face if it wouldn't kill your image and any action at the table from then on.

Yeah, I agree, it's slightly insane to say you're sorry after giving a beating. Athletes never do that after a competition, even when there's a lot more at stake. It is good to be sportsmanlike, so you can congratulate someone for playing well, console them for running into bad luck, etc.

Why should poker be different from any sport? Can you imagine Kobe Bryant apologizing to the other team after hitting a buzzer beater?

I sometimes do apologyze, especially in a live game when I bust someone I know by a suckout, I hate sucking out almost as much as I hate being sucked out, and in a sense even more because that means that I played badly

Yea, if I know I made a bad call, then sucked out I may say something like "sorry", but that is about it.

I have also had situations where I made the right call (based on outs, implied odds, etc.) and hit my hand where the other person went off on me. I love these guys cuz I just stay silent throughout the whole thing.

You guys know this is selfish, right? It isn't about making opp feel better (because we all know it doesn't), it's about you feeling better. And it's lame.

i like to try and further the tilt. if i see a guy on a bad run, and layy one on him...the second my card hits, i go Doc Holliday on him..."oops ;)"

I like a Ship It, or Fed-Ex to [INSERT NAME] when I bust someone. Or the good old ssshhhhhh I'm counting your chips after I've layed a bad beat on some poor schmo.

I always thought apologising meant you could kick someones baby and not have everyone who is watching hate you for it.

apology is lame shlt. you're all there to take each other's chips, and everyone knows that while the Suckout Kid is apologetic on the outside, he's dancing like a leprachan on the inside. Poker = Sport = War. You don't shoot some guy in the stomach than come up and say "sorry dude that sux".

It's the most insincere shlt ever, cuz it's obvious that no one is sorry after they win money, or win period. They're fuckin ecsatic. I never say sorry b/c I never am and anyone that fakes it is a pussy.

There's nothing wrong with having some class at the table.

Last night, I was playing in a bar tournament, and the blinds were getting ridiculous, at 1-200. I had about 1800 in chips, big stack was around 2700 and small stack had 900. We're down to 300. I'm on the button and find A-10. I make a standard 3xBB raise to 600. Big stack mucks, and the short stack (who is uber-tight, and kinda whiny) pushes in for 300 more. I'm getting nearly 5 to 1, so I call, but I know I'm behind.

He rolls over pocket kings, and I hit my ace on the turn to crack him. Dude seemed legitimately depressed, so I shook his hand and apologized.

He waited all night for a premium hand. I didn't play it wrong (other than maybe not open pushing, but the result would have been the same)

He was a nice guy. He played a little nitty, but generally solid. I don't see a need to rub it in at this point or be an asshole. Making an apology may take a little sting out of it by assuring him he played it right. It doesn't make you weak. I don't really feel guilty about it, or my play... but I did somewhat feel bad for him.
