Dont you just hate it when your eggs leak?

Ok so Im half way through boiling an egg for an awsome sandwhich. Usually I put the egg in first and then boil the water but I didnt want to get distracted and overcook the egg so I decided to boil the water and then put the egg in once it is done. This method has a significantly higher chance of egg leakage so I put some salt in the water so that, if it came to the worst, then at least the egg wouldnt leak too much. Obviously it still cracked and egg leaked and now I wont have nearly as much egg as I wanted. If anyone has any suggestions on how to avoid this problem in future they would be very much appreciated. Egg leakage sucks but together we can beat it!

Why don't you just do the first way? I mean, it doesn't seem to hard.

I boil the whole 12 pack at the same time. I usually don't want a warm egg and it's not like a freshly boiled egg tastes different.

Part of the reason that your run-of-the-mill egg cracks so easily is that chickens are given hormones to make them produce bigger eggs with the side effect of thinner shells. I have found that organic eggs crack less easily, but most people don't want to pay 2-2.5x as much for eggs.

Assuming you're talking about the egg cracking from thermal expansion and not hitting the bottom of the pot, you might try the following:

1) Let the egg come to room temperature before placing it in the boiling water
2) Failing that (or instead), temper the egg by placing it in a bowl of warm water before placing it in the boiling water
3) If that doesn't work, try adding some of the boiling water to the bowl of water to further increase the egg's temperature before placing it in the pot of boiling water.

Run the eggs under warm water from the tap before you put them in the pot to get the shells moist and to bring their outside temperature up. They will then crack less easily. Also, adding salt to the water in the pot will help keep the whites from leaking out if they do happen to crack.

It's better than watching a pot of water boil.

I used to think so too. Im skinny as fuck though, and while I never was really picky Ive decided to force myself to not be picky at all. Esp when it comes to foods that can help to build body mass.

I think the real question we're all interested in is: were you having soliders with?

It was egg-mayonaised in a sandwhich. Good good sandwhich.

Just put the egg in the water before you boil it and it will never break. I've read that it takes about 18 minutes from the time you turn the heat on until the egg is done cooking, and in my experience that's about right. Why don't you set the timer on your microwave to 18 minutes? That way if you get distracted you'll remember to turn the heat off when the egg is done.

Thermal shock cuases the shells to crack. Leave them out for an hour, then place them in the water and bring it up to temperature.
