Dave Chappelles The Man!
george carlin
bill hicks
david cross
Chris Rock and (the late) Mitch Hedberg
Rock's delivery is great and Hedberg is just pure genius.
I'm Canadian so I vote for Russell Peters.
If you're talking listening to the CD: Dave Attell, Chris Rock, Dane Cook, Frank Caliendo, George Lopez, Daniel Tosh are all classic.
I'm meh on David Cross and George Carlin, both solid just not quite me.
Carlos Mencia's DVD is super cluth. That Dave Chapelle you mentioned is superb.
I've been DVRing Comedy Central Presents so if I really thought about it I could probably make a top 50 list (Megan Mooney and Jimmy Carr are the best I've seen recently).
{EDIT: Dave Attell is easily #1. Anyone who picks another comedian hasn't listened to the CD.}
Mitch Hedberg (RIP you funny bastard)
Ron White
Dave Chappelle
Chris Rock
George Carlin
Hedberg is definitely my favorite and the other four are in no particular order.

it was mitch.
mencia steals alot of jokes. joe rogan of all people called him out on it.
whew no one has said Jeff Foxworthy thank god.
You may be a red-neck if you use the same punchline over and over.
You may be a red-neck if you think this shits funny.
Carlos Mencia - insert joke making fun of mexicans so he can then make fun of white people followed by something randomly ridiculous with a punchline of WHAT WERE U THINKING? and other loud shit. He's terrible.
Michael Richards
how has no one mentioned eddie murphy and richard pryor? 2 of the funniest stand up comedians of all time IMO.
another one no one has mentioned is jim gaffigan
david cross is also fucking hilarious
Bill Hicks is my all-time favorite comic. Dave Chappelle and Mitch Hedberg are way up there too. George Carlin and Chris Rock are good. I saw some pretty hilarious stuff by Demetri Martin recently. Sarah Silverman is hit or miss, but when she hits, it's pretty damn funny.
From what I've seen of the comedy central show, Carlos Mencia is just repetitive and stupid. I've never seen his stand-up but I can't imagine it being much better.
Also, I really don't understand the fuss over Dane Cook. His jokes are generally predictable, and those that aren't are generally only a little funny.
Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran...

QFT...agreed with all...but I'd put Hedburg ahead of CookQuote:

I also like www.frankcaliendo.com
you should watch his free videos on the site, He does a John madden impresion, George Bush, and a whole bunch of other peeps too.
He does them better than the people them self.
1) Mitch
2) Demetri Martin
No one else is half as good, Sarah Silverman and Richard Pryor are excellent but the above are beyond genius.
Oh wait we all forgot Jerry Seinfeld...dont underrate him
1) Tie: Richard Pryor and Bill Hicks
3) Mitch Hedbeg
8) Tie: Lenny Bruce, Woody Allen, Steve Martin, George Carlin, Andy Kaufman
10) Tie: Patton Oswalt, Chris Rock
Demetri Martin was funny on the daily show if it's the guy I'm thinking of. Haven't seen his standup..TO YOUTUBE!
I wish Mitch didn't die.
I also wish I would have gone to see him when he came to Kansas City. My (now) wife and I had just moved in together and money was tight, so we couldn't justify spending $45 apiece on a comedy show at the time. "We'd see him when he came back to Kansas City."
Dude dies the very next month.
RIP Mitch.
How are all you white cracka mothafuckas gonna bring up Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock but show no love for the real G Katt Williams?
My main man Katt speaks on da chronic:

gg for actually liking him before he died, unlike like 99% of his other fans :)Quote:

Mitch's jokes aren't funny his delivery is phenomenol though!
Yeah, had tickets in Richmond right around the time Mitch died. He was scheduled but didn't show up. No one at the show said as to why at the time. It was later revealed a couple days later that he wasn't there because of him dying. Shame I was literally a day late to see him live.
I got lucky enough to see him about 15 times. Almost every time he came to Dallas in the last 4 years of his life my wife and I saw him at least twice. He was great - the only comedian of his fame I've ever see take requests. There was nothing like seeing him get to the ned of the show and here people shout "Dufresne!" in the same way folks shout "Free Bird!" at a Skynyrd concert.Quote:

Shit, I'm confused. What thread is this? Oh man.
Put another one in Hedburg's camp.
"I want a job naming kitchen appliances. I will take what ever the item does and add an "ER" to the end.
Oh, this thing blends . . . I will call it a blender.
This refrierates food and stuff . . . I will call it a refrigerator."
I was FN ROFLicious.
"I once played poker with tarot cards.
I got a full house. 4 people died."
Steven Wright
Dennis Leary's "No cure for cancer" CD is an almost verbatum ripoff of Bill Hicks material. Leary is widely known in the industry as a hack. Carlos Mencia is a huge thief of all kinds of material. Mitch Hedberg is a Steven Wright clone. Period.
Dane Cook is one of the best stand up comedians I've ever seen. The reason? A good stand up comedian doesn't tell jokes as much as stories. He brings you on a funny journey. This is why Bill Cosby is legendary. Hedberg tells jokes. Therefore he is not a great comedian. If you hung out with him offstage, he would not be funny. Neither would Rodney Dangerfield. Dane cook and Bill Cosby would be. John Stewart would be hilarious to hang out with. So would Conan O Brien.
A good comedian is an improviser first, comedy writer second. Writing cookie cutter jokes is not respectable stage comedy. I would rank Chappelle higher if he didn't use the comedy crutch known as the race card far too often. He does improvise well, but it's almost always about race.
I will admit Mitch Hedberg is probably the best writer of jokes stand up has ever seen. Some of his jokes are absolutely genius.
yea, dane cook is probably the best comedian of the last ten years or so, not really that close.
An interesting topic: why do all female comedians suck ass?
That's not true. It's just that most of them suck.Quote:

in no order dane cook, chappelle, eddie murphy
edit: ive only seen jamie kennedy once for like an hour long thing he did on comedy central but that was extremely funny so he gets in there too
Philosophically I agree, although I don't think you are right. A comedian is both things you mention. Some like one better than the other and vice versa.Quote:

In terms of your definition, no one can beat Steve Martin. He NEVER told a joke and is funny as shit.
I like Dane cooks CDs, I can't stand watching him flop around on stage.
I like what Mitch Hedburg tried to do, but I can't stand his delivery. He sounded like a retarded kid who struggles to put sentences together.
Add Ron White to the list
Ron White's drunk in public story is pretty good. Other than that....meh
Ross Noble (shocked he hasn't been mentioned yet.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UyHa1mkB6Q)
George Carlin
Lee Evans
Jack Dee
Mitch Hedberg
anyone have a good link for Mitch Hedberg? I keep seeing his name, but I've never heard of him.
youtube him
