Decent Beginner Looking for tips to get to the next level.

Hi all,

1st time poster - looks like a great site.

I've been playing NL Texas Hold Em for about the last three years.
Home games, internet, and have just begun playing live games in casinos.
I'm up about $1000 after 5 visits to the casio. My strengths are my minor abilty to read people, am a fast learner, and have lots of patience. My weakness is that I play very tight (although good for not losing much $), I fold too easily to aggressive players, esp. during pre-flop or post flop.

Last night I was up about $150; then agressive players sat down and made a killing at the table. I left with my buy-in plus $10 :(

Any tips, BESIDES more practice might you recommend?

I suggest you read all the stickies in this forum. Read all the posts in the beginner's digest. Also note the sticky that talks about the review session that goes on every week in the Holdem Strats forum.

After that, play play play! Take a batch of HHs and send them to someone to review (this means that you gotta take part in the review session :)).

I also suggest you search for "aggression" using the search function. Look for a post aokrongly wrote about the topic and read it. Then try some of the things he suggests in the post. It's a post that helped me a TON when I first started playing and didn't know anything about aggression. I'd find it for you, but I think I'm gonna fail my exam on Tuesday if I spent anymore time here :( If you haven't found it by Tuesday, tell me and I'll find it for you then :-P

You should go read everything else on this poker forum. Im sorry im a beginner like you and i used that question and i was being polite also and got nothing. But hey i can say this if you post some hands and situations i could help you.

Like courtiebee said, read all the stickies. Post alot of problem hands. Reply to alot of posted hands with your take on the situation. Don't worry about your advice being incorrect, someone is going to post a correction.

You got what you needed. Poker is very much a self-learned game. You need to play a lot of hands and encounter many different situations. Before you come in looking for advice and just posting any semi-difficult situations you had during a session you should really take a hard look at all the hands you played FIRST. If you do not learn how to analyze hands, situations, tough spots, and always just have a veteran member here do it for you, it will be tough for you to learn the game.

So my advice, play a lot of hands (reviewing your hand histories after each session) read some theory books, sharpen up your math skills, and then when you have exhausted thinking about a certain topic come post it in here and get responses on it.
