Players going out at same time in tourney question

Ok, so I know that if two players go out on the same hand in a tournament, that the player who had the most chips to start the hand would finish in the higher position.

What if two players go out on the same hand and they have the same amount of chips? For example, Player A goes all in for his last 2000 chips. Player B calls, and he also has exactly 2000 chips. Player C calls them both, and has them covered. Player C wins the hand, knocking both players out.

Do Players A and B tie for that spot and split any money?? Or would whoever had the best hand between Player A and Player B (even though both "lost") determine who finished higher and got more money??

It would be decided in accordance with the tournament rules, which may differ from tournament to tournament. However, below is a section from a common tournament rule book:

WINNING THE TOURNEY The final player remaining with all the chips will be the first prize winner. The last player eliminated will be the second prize winner; the second last player eliminated will be the third prize winner, etc.. If more than one player is eliminated on the same hand, they shall split the combined prize money for the appropriate places.

HomePokerTourney Tournament Rules, pg 1.

So, if you were to use these rules, and 2 people were to go out at the same time, leaving only the winner remaining, then those two people would split the prize money for 2nd and 3rd place.

They would play a round of rock paper scissors, best 2 out of 3, winner gets the high spot.

Well ... that depends ... I believe if the difference is who finishes on the bubble and who finishes ITM ... it is 3 out of 5.

They take the average pay out of the 2 spots.

If they finish 2nd and 3rd and the pay outs for 2nd and 3rd are $10 and $15 they each would get $12.50

I thought that the two players would split the money. It happened in a home game I had over the weekend, and one of the players thought he should get more money because his hand beat the other guy's hand.

I've seen the hand rankings dictating this. As in, the two 2k stacks bust out, and the better hand finishes higher than the other.

It all depends on the rules of that particular game though.
