I raised 4 times the big blind in a $2/$4 NL game. I flopped a set of Jacks. He had J9. I did a weak bet. He reraised. I reraised him. He called. Then I made a pot size bet. He calls and rivers a gutshot straight from his nine. Ridiculous!
What did I do wrong? Did I slow it down too much? Presented too much weakness?
From the way you described the hand, you seem to be an inexperienced player.
The reason I can tell is because an experienced player would have described some very important details of the hand that you left out, including your position, your opponents position, stack sizes, table image, the size of the pot, and the size of the bets.
You should probably play lower stakes. No offense intended.

Well I was in early position. He was on the button. We both had about $250 in stack size. My table image is very tight because I've been folding a lot, the size of the pot after the flop was $36. I make a weak bet of $5 he reraised $5 more to $10. I reraisesd to $35. He called. I made a pot size bet after that. He called. I was putting him on AJ, KJ, or QJ. But I didn't expect J9 after raising 4 times the big blind of $4. His table image was a calling station only if he can limp in the blinds. He rarely calls a raise unless he has something decent. Will that do Renton?

I am inclined to believe you played it ok, especially considering the stack sizes. If the flop were draw heavy, then you gave him a really good price to see the turn with your small flop reraise. You made it to where he had to call 25 in a 81 dollar pot, which is good enough odds to chase most draws. Sure he only had a gutshot, but he also had a pair of jacks, which he's going to presume to give him 5 outs for two pair (even though those outs aren't good for him with your set, he doesn't know this). So he probably thinks his hand may be good as it is, but if it isn't he has nine outs to something better.
You probably should have made it more to go on the flop, raise it to at least 50 or so, but as the hand turned out you made it plenty expensive enough for him to draw out. With 65bb effective stacks, theres no way you should ever get away from a set of jacks, unless theres four to a str8 or flush on the board, and even then its hard.
Well there was a 6,J,8 on the flop. Based on his player personality he would not be holding 57, 97, or 9T after 4x big blind. Turn was a 5, river was a 7. I still couldn't imagine him looking for draws on the turn. He had 10 outs with any J, 9, or 7 on the turn if he put me on an over pair. Guess my pot size bet on the turn still gave him the right price on the turn.

ya i'm still confused about what exactly took place. did you bet him AI on the turn with your PSB? what was the action on the river, if any? the reason some of us are saying to move down or that you are inexperienced or whatever is because the hand just seems to be a bad beat that we all should expect to happen every time we sit down to play. if you got the money in while ahead then nh. you can't avoid bad luck so don't spend too much time focusing on it. just tell villain nh and hope he sticks around.
If he now challenges the FTR regulars to a HU, then the deja-vu is complete.

1. Suckouts are the reasons why you have a roll. You should be happy that he called you down with 4 outs. That being said its crappy that you lost, but what can you do. Im sure that all of us here have been destacked by 4 outers, runner runners, had our bottom two pair counterfeited, etc etc. Who gives a f--k. All that matters is that you got all the money in with the best hand, thats all you can do bro.
