Don't we already have this somewhere?

Not really. Not that I can see anyway.
There are bits 'n' pieces of this all over the place, but nothing in the Beginners Circle (where arguably it is needed most!). FyrFytr's post covers a glossary of terms, but not really the abbreviations used daily in the posts on FTR. Humph's sticky only really covers the table/positional ones.
Just trying to save the peeps some time and effort!
I've thought of a couple more as well
FT = Final Table
ahhh .... the promised land
HU = Heads-Up
TPGK = Top Pair, Good Kicker
Thank you. Half the battle of being able to learn from this site is understanding the terms.
I use http://www.dictionaryofgambling.com/...terms/poker/a/
but it doesn't have everything listed here. Thanks again.
roffle roffle. I just read this. That was fun.Quote:

Thanks for putting this together, Staresy. Eventually, we need to consolidate all of our glossary of terms into one Sticky topic.
For now, I've made this Sticky. (Wow.. there are a lot of Stickies in here.)
Yes, we need to figure out some way to clean it up.

R+S = Rebuys and Strap-ons (consult the FTR dictionary for a definition of this term).
Here's a few more:
MHIG = My Hand is Good
VPIP% = Voluntary Put in the Pot %
Dwarfie= A young, british poker player that makes liberal use of stacked phone books to reach the table.
x BB/100 = winrate expressed as Big Bets per 100 hands played
STFU = Shut The F*** Up = not an expression usually found in FTR posts (we're too nice to each other to use terms like this), but certainly one you might come across in the chat box of your favourite poker site
Atlases, dictionaries and phone books are my friends. :PQuote:

I have heard of people referring to a HoH chart. Is this something Santa brings you for Christmas and if yes, has anyone noticed the typo?
But seriously, what is a HoH chart?
i think its a Harrington on Holdem Chart (im not sure though)

SSH = Small Stakes Holdem by Ed Miller, David Sklansky, and Mason Malmuth (2+2 Publishing)
HoH = Harrington on Holdem by Dan Harrington

WLLH = Winning Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones
If anyone can answer this one: what does STBY mean? Sorry if its obvious, but I see it all the time on FTR

Thanks,

two overs means two over cards and its easy to have 18 or more outs for example:
your cards: As Ks
his cards: 2c 2h
Board: Ts 9s Jc
here you have 18 outs...9 spades, 3 queens (one is counted in the spades category), 3 kings and 3 aces= 9+3+3+3=18 outs

donk bet?
donk is short for donkey, meaning not smart.
Pretty context sensitive, but if the board is 789T4 with three clubs and you hold 77 and bet, it's a donk bet.
Is that supposed to be VP$IP%? :lol:Quote:

betting for value = you think you have the best hand and want opp to put more money in the pot.
as opposed to:
betting for info = you think you MAY have the best hand, but looking to opp's reaction to your bet to get more info
bluffing - you don't think you have the best hand, but hoping opp will fold to your bet
semi bluffing - you probably don't have the best hand right now, hoping opp will fold, but if he calls you may end up making the best hand.
Most basic value bet - board is QJT all hearts, you hold AK hearts - you have the nuts, any bet you make is a value bet. On same board, a bet for info might be if you held QJ. You might semi bluff with just the Kh. If you bet with 7s8s, it's a bluff.
ICM?
Aces up?
ICM thread:
http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...&highlight=icm
Aces up means two pair, with one being Aces. Hold A7, board is A74, you have Aces up.
M (as in "my M was 6 or 7")?
Not 100% sure but I think its a term Dan Harrington coined to suggest a relationship between the blind level and your present chip stack.
eg.
Your stack is 1500
Blinds are 50/100
50 + 100 = 150
Stack/Tolal blinds = 1500/150 = 10
This is your M (10).
I think thats how it works.
Actually, i think it's:Quote:

The only gap I'm aware of is the one in my head that should be filled by the 'gap concept' in terms of poker.
Thanks for the HU on the abbreviations. This will be very helpful for me to bettter understand WTF you guys are saying which should help me gain better EV when sitting in CO IMNSHO> :-)
Tom
Let me try this one - the gap concept describes that to CALL A RAISE requires a hand that's STRONGER than a hand one would OPEN RAISE with in the same position. The difference between the strength of the two hands is the gap.
Say you have AJo in mid position. Everyone folds to you, so you raise. But if UTG raises before you, your AJ is probably no good any more as UTG must have a very strong hand to make this raise. So you fold.
See Tournament Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky for a detailed explanation of the Gap Concept.
Hey guys!
Been snoopin around on here a while, and finally decided to join and maybe glean some wisdom from you guys....
How about these two
teh and meh?
Thanks!
I don't think anyone actually knows what they mean. They just evolved as FTR speak.
teh = the (I think?)
meh = whatever
teh is a generic internet term meaning the. e.g. I am teh leet haxor.
Lisa: We're the MTV generation. We feel neither highs nor lows.
Homer: Really? What's that like?
Lisa: Meh.
As you can see I am not teh l33t Nerd.
Okay, I've seen this in a couple hand histories, and I assume it has do to with PokerTracker but I'm not getting it.
"The villain in this hand is 27/5, so I know he isn't a complete donk."
What does the 27/5 mean? 27 folds preflop vs 5 postflop or something?
thanks
I think that's 27% VP$IP and 5% PFR.
Thanks Salt3d!
Here's my contribution to the learning curve.
General Acronyms
ITM: In the Money
OTM: Out of the Money
ROI: Return on Investment
HH: Hand History
H/Hr: hands per hour played (average) at a table
PokerTracker or Statistical
VP$IP or VP%IP or VP$IP$: Voluntarily put $$ in Pot (%)
a basic way to measure "rockiness"
WtSD: Went to Show Down (percentage)
a basic way to measure "calling station" nature
W$SD: Won $$ at Show Down (percentage)
Where you want to be with your non-bluffs :)
CR: Check-Raise (as the betting tactic)
I've seen this listed as simple +/- and as percentage
AF: Aggression Factor
I don't know how this is calculated, It's a ratio, I think it's a meta-statistic
PFA: Post-Flop Aggression
Don't know how this one works either
QFT = Quoted for Truth
Can't think of a good example, but I've seen it around the site
line-check?
line-check = you post a hand you played and then ask people to comment on how you bet on each street.
I don't think this one is already in the list
C-bet, cbet, continuation bet
A bet made from early position, not to push players out of the pot in itself, but to continue to establish a strong position or image. Big enough to get information if someone else re-raises you, but not so big as to really hurt your stack if you get smacked.
Note: not the same thing as a value bet, where you're trying to extract money on a dominant made hand.
Usage might be something like:
"The turn came a rag, so I thought my set was still good, so I made a c-bet to see what would happen."
