Home Game $5 Tourny: how bad is this call by opponent?

3 players left in 8 man $5 tournament home game. payouts are $30 for 1st, $10 for 2nd.

I'm chip leader with $45, villian is next with about $25, and shorty has only about $10. Blinds are $.75/$1.50, i'm big blind. Villian is dealer and raises to $4.00 (standard raise). Shortie folds... i have A9, i reraise $10, not because it's a paticularly strong hand, because it's not, but because i know he'd be an idiot to want to put all his chips in on something he's unsure of. Well, he thinks about it and then pushes all in... I say fuck, but since there's already 35 in the pot and $15 to call, i call. He flips over 55, What the Hell is he thinking! And i lose the hand.

How bad was this by the Villian?

P.S. i end up winning the tourny anyway.

He may of had a read. Maybe he thought you were weak since you didn't push. He may have also factored in shorty and thought you might fold.

I don't hate his play. Play for first.

It's more complicated than that, three man pocket 5's are pretty good anyway. Also, he plays with you a lot I would assume... if he's a good player he could easily have a read on you, or maybe he had a good feeling about it. He's also used to your betting style which would greately influence his decision. I've gone with my gut and gotten paid off huge before. Either way I like his play in that spot, you coulda just been trying to steal, there's so many factors you'd have to write a half page just to cover the basics...

and, he didn't call, you did. both of your plays were fine. a lot of this depends on how the table was playing though.

It's usually a bad idea to get into a coinflip situation on the bubble with someone who can bust you. I don't think the player with the fives played the hand well at all, but if you really did "flip out" over it, that's pretty classless and defeats the purpose of a 5 dollar home game which is supposed to be just for fun.

It was a good push and a good call by you. I like to minraise in this spot because min raising will give you just as much information about an opponents hand as a 2.5X raise (like yours) would. BECAUSE, if he comes over the top, he generally has: PP or big Ace. Another way to play it would be to call, and see how aggressive he his postflop. It's easier to outplay a semi-strong hand postflop than it is to out play it preflop when everything is at stake and cards are turned over. In other words, play the player.

And if opp has ANY brains at all he knows to call that min raise with excellent odds. You are making the mistake here, not him.

I like villain's play a lot more then hero's.

If you are going to repop him, put him allin.

Okay, here's why i don't get why this is a +EV play. No matter what I have, he's at best 50/50. He could be also easily dominated.

Why would you want to put all your money in on a guaranteed 50/50 when you've only invested $4.00, less than 1/6 of his stack?

Also can this be moved to the Sit and Go Tourney Tactics forum? I think it's a little more fitting there.

He most likely has 55% to win. With only 3 people, over-pp is rare. Good push. Especially if he had a read that you might be trying to bully him.

Well, you've answered your own question. If he knows the deal is 50/50 and he has to be $21 to win $50, then it's a no-brainer.

I like his play. I also think he was hoping youd fold A9 there.

I just thought that the fact there is a $10 stack comes into play. If the shortie was $5 would my play be better?

It all depends on whether or not you think you can push him around.

If its a $5 home game then

a) He probably doesnt care about it all that much.
b) He probably knows you, and knows you will try to push him around.
