My thoughts on Rippy

What has happened here? This is just pathetic. Most of the posts are at about the 3rd grade white trash level. Eventhing is f this and f that.

Dont even think of trying to defend your actions for a second. They were totally reprehensible, beyond any defense.

To all the other posters. You fueled the fire beyond belief. Who cares if the 2+2 people hate. They definately hate me. I take their money and they think they are right. A bunch of professors without true knowledge.

Now lets get down to brass tacks, when someone you know is obviously melting down, is your best move to pull out the blow torch and speed the process. Did any of you extend a helping hand? I would have called him but i just heard about it from ellippsjeff and fnord on vent. Cmon guys, get a grip, help a fellow out when he is faultering. It is obvious from the posts this didnt happen. Everyone was more interested in fueling the fire.

Um, we tried to help him, he is recalcitrant. Some people just flamed him back though, but there was constructive criticism too, gg.

I have offered him advice, tried to reason with him, and in the end just given up. He is one of the most stubborn people i have ever talked to (not to dissimilar to your stubborness, the only difference is that you are stubborn in your winning ways and he is stubborn in his losing ways). So i just gave up, and the only thing you can do is laugh at the irony and absurdity that is his poker career because almost nothing is going to prevent him from self destructing.

ps i'm a litdle drunbk right now so if that didn't make sense sorry.

A. I think this went a lot deeper than 2+2....alot deeper, most of what went down resulted from tension that has been building for months, if not years for some people. Rippy brought this on himself because he couldn't handle the fact that many of his ideas are wrong. 2+2 should have been a wake-up call. Then he posted here to whine about it and we all gave him the dose of reality that we should have done when he 1st posted his guide.

B. We tried to help him Soupie, but when someone is so cocky and arrogant that they can't handle simple critique without responding and trashing the other person, there isn't much too be done. In fact if my memory is correct, you yourself have said how you try to help him, but he just won't listen.

C. As i've said to many others who asked about why I took the time to write my posts, some things have to be exposed when they are kept in the dark too long. Rippy used his "golden image" on FTR to manipulate and con dozens and dozens of new players who didn't know any better. Noone had the courage to stand up and say something for a long time. When it all finally came out, a lot of resentment came with it. I'm sure most people who were hardcore flaming him will tell you they should have worded things differently, but the main points are still there, and they needed to be.

In the end, all of this is better off in the open then circling around the rumor mill.

i agree with lamb, rippy's been a disgrace to ftr ever since he'd pm everybody 900 times for "a few dollars on stars" in irc every day for 3 months straight. then he'd pay people back on his own time even if the money was 20% of somebody's bankroll.

it just got to the point where people got sick of his shit and he got what was coming to him. hes a decent player but he has an image of himself that he certainly does not live up to. hes definitely not the type of person who should have the role model status that he currently has.

anyway, i thought it was a bit ridiculous that the "rippy moves to 2p2" thread was locked. if a person on this site is held in high esteem, but has serious holes in his game, i think people should know about it. especially if hes writing guides that beginners follow religiously.

I doubt many beginners would follow his guide. Its too risky for beginners to be comfortable with IMO and everyone else they can hear is telling them to play TAG.I havent posted before because i didnt want to step into the middle of a flame war but seeing as its going to be another never ending thread ill throw in my 2c.

First off ive never been asked for money by him so i dont have anything personal against the guy. I agree that using (at the time) FTRs irc or PMs to ask noobs for money should not happen. If you need money why not ask someone with a few K bankroll. There are plenty of those guys on this site.

Now to the guide.

I think its a good guide which can dramatically improve your game IF you selectivly take points out of it rather than following it religiously. Even if Rippy can play profitably by following that guide to the letter, I (and all of the other noobs) dont yet have the instincts to be able to make it work.

I think Fnord made the best point. Rippy clearly makes up alot of value that makes up for the value he loses by playing, seemingly random cards. From a poker point of view it would be far more constructive to have a discussion of where this value comes from, rather than having a bizzare and largly irrelevent argument about who has the smallest bankroll.

You guys started to try and offer constructive criticism but it didnt stay that way for long. You carried on leaning on him when it was pretty obvious he was about to go nuclear. Take the pressure off a little and get back to the constructive debate rather than just allowing yourselves to be dragged into mindless flaming. I introduced one of my mates to FTR a couple of days ago. I gotta say I was pretty embarressed to see a full scale flame war at the top of the community the day after I introduce someone to "the friendliest poker forum ever".

Last of all Rippy.
Everyone else on this forum posts hand histories of difficult descisions that they have had to make hoping that someone will give them some insight into how they should think about these situations in order to play them better next time.
All of the hand histories you post seem to be you winning massive pots after hitting massive hands with junk starting cards. Obviously once youve hit a massive hand, winning is easy.
Why not post some hands where you miss and have to think about the situation, or even hands where you make the wrong call and wonder if you did the right thing?
When people try to offer constructive criticism why not accept it, or at least respectfully explain why you disagree. This is a forum and it is for discussion of hands and styles. If you dont want to discuss this stuff then whats the point of even being here. You have a unique style that seems to be working for you. Why not take the time to actually explain why rather than telling people they are unpleasant body parts.

Soupie, you're asking for a level of maturity well beyond mine. I tried to deal with Rippy before and it gets frustrating. There is only so much Rippy one man can take before he gives way and falls to his level.

It was a disgusting episode in FTR history that had been brewing for some time. We should just put it all behind us and try grow from it. Maybe in the future, when something like this blows up, we can handle it a bit more like adults.

I dont get how people take this stance. Yes I acted immature too, yes I shoulda just stayed outta it when he started trying to insult me. However I was trying to reason with him, I was offering constructive criticism. The guy just doesnt listen, he never once in that 2 pages of posts reply to one good point anyone made, and there where lots of good points. All he could say was "look at my results" then when I was just trying to give him a reality check and show him that they arent really that great, I get insults thrown at me. He says I dont know shit about poker, he says I have no room to comment, he points out that my results are terrible. I still believe Ripp is essentially a good guy. He can be arrogant, stubborn as hell and refuse to listen to logical arguments, but I don't think he purposely tried to incite controversy. Due to his abrasive personality though, controversy followed him wherever he went.

Soupie brings up a good point, and one that I've tried making before. At a certain point you should have realized that, regardless if you had a valid argument, Rippy just wasn't going to listen you.

I've heard many people state that he never listened to them. Then why continue to argue? It's pointless. There comes a time when you have to realize that a person is being totally unreasonable and you have to be able to let it go. So many people insisted on debating him though. It takes more than one person to have an argument, and there was certainly no shortage of people willing to participate. Many of the negative comments Ripptyde made weren't things he just said randomly. They were made in response to things said to him.

I'm not defending Ripptyde, but I think the immaturity wasn't exclusive to just him. There seems to be a pack mentality when it comes to addressing someone that makes illogical, immature or absurdly stupid comments. Someone takes a cheap shot and before you know it everyone else feels like they have a right to put in their two cents. Everyone circles around the victim and takes their turn kicking them until a situation turns into nothing but a flame contest.

This situation isn't unique to Ripptyde either. Po$$e$$sed? Sure, the guy sometimes makes comments that are rediculous in my opinion. It's one thing to poke fun at the guy, but I've noticed it starting to go beyond that.

There is an appropriate way to address people, regardless if they're asking for analysis of a HH or posting a strategy guide that you think is full of flaws. So many of the replies to Ripp and others are completely devoid of any tact. Even if someone posts something that is controversial or even flat-out wrong, they still deserve to be talked to with a certain amount of respect.

To me, Rippy is like the stripper that thinks she's going to move to LA and become a Oscar winning actress. You know it's next to hopeless, but you can't reason with her. She already has her mine made up. We all know that Ripp is more than likely not giong to be the next big poker pro. We all more or less told him that in our own words a long, long time ago. It seems like so many people realized that he wasn't going to listen, yet they still tried forcing their opinions on him.

Call him a cash game fish. Tear apart his strategy guide. Do it with tact though, and if nothing else, at least let the guy have his dreams.

dnuts, he brought the topic up, I tried to make some good points, he ignored them and said look at my results. I made a good point that his results are not all that amazing, actually not amazing at all. This is only opinion in the sense that X winnings in Y time is debatable. However he boast about results that are completely untrue, its just fact that the results he claims are not true. When I pointed this out with no disrespect, just making the point, he flamed me. He told me that I have worse results and have no room to talk (or something that extent.) Fine, I might leave this one alone at this time, however the sad fact is that I quite possibly have made more then him in the past year, and Im not gonna let that slide. Then theres the thing with dwarfman where he did nothing but ask a simple question. I made a point that had the possibility of pissing him off, however it was a good point and if he was in any way level headed he could see that. Hes shown no maturity and even less respect for those around him. Good riddence.

Rippy can play however he wants. He can tell anyone to play however, no one has to adopt it, people can debate and take what they will from that discussion The real problem comes from the complete lack of respect and civility to fellow posters. And it just seems that Rippy has a temper where he can't keep cool, he goes berzerk instead. And those outbursts and flaming IS NOT ALLOWED. By anyone. I wish Rippy didn't act that way, he could've controlled the situation (and others in the past). Even if he's under a bunch of criticism, he could've just said "I disagree" and been done. And as one of the earliest "founding" members of FTR, I would have hoped he'd consider the integrity and class of this site over a stupid forum debate.

I have been in the irc channel and seen people who have posted in these threads act so nice to his face and the minute he is gone say some of the worst things to his face. Make comments on his wins and then make a 'joke' about taking bets as to how long before he is broke again.

IMHO that is just tasteless and wrong. So two-faced and ignorant. Then to come to the forums and act holier than thou to everyone else.

I have been critisized and even banned from irc, and not only myself banned but friends of mine banned for nothing more than having the same ident as I have. For what reason you may be wondering. For defending defending someone I consider a friend. Someone who has never been anything but nice to me. Who didn't ask me why I was in the channel; accused me of not playing; said things to me that I know they would never say to their mother and expect me to take it.

You all wonder why rippy might feel the way he does? Before you say anything about his actions you might want to think about things that were said about him and then you might figure out why he feels the way he feels.

Granted you reap what you sow but it works both ways. I thought this was supposed to be a place where we support and help each other not tear each other down and act like spoiled children who aren't getting enough attention from Mommy. Maybe everyone should stop and think 2 minutes before they open their mouths and say anything. Treat someone like you would want to be treated. It might get you further in life than you realize.

When I got banned from irc for supporting rippy I got pulled into the pile of crap being thrown around. My name has been used a few times as being a "snitch" to rippy. If you would like to see irc logs boost I can show you but in the end it doesn't matter.

I was banned for no other reason than being his friend. I was told "You can go and show this conversation to rippy like you always do." then was banned from the channel. And yes I am paraphrasing there. I don't want to be accused of misquoting anyone.

This talking badly about rippy of late started in the irc channel. It just overflowed here from there.

First of all, I suggest you do not bring IRC drama into here. At first it pertained to the discussion currently going on, it seems to be moving away from there. I suggest you stop that becaus IRC drama is banned from FTR forums.

As for "poor rippy, you guys ar so mean to him" stuff. Read the thread, he started the riot, and you expect us to feel bad for him when the mob tramples him?

Also you say that people accuse you of not playing poker. This might have to do with the fact that Youve never once posted in any forum except the community, and I dont know if youve even posted here more hten a few times. Also on IRC and vent Ive never personally seen you talk about poker once. If you dont play poker, I dont really care, dont know why youre here, but dont really care.. whatever floats your boat. If you do play poker, then again I dont really care. But you have to understand the thoughts in peoples minds when they see someone around a poker community all the time yet never see them play or talk about poker.

And as far as people congratualating rippy to his face, then talking shit behind his back. Well, if the guy wins something and I see him in IRC, Ill say "good work man congrats". Why wouldnt I? Its polite, if/when I win something it makes me feel good to hear people say "good work" "congrats" and so on. I dont hate the guy, I just dont respect him anymore. And I dont mind if I never hear from him again. However why not say a couple words that will make someone feel good? As for talking shit, well... its a community, people are gonna talk. There will be rumors, and if you constantly are forcing yourself at the center of the community, people will talk. Also, all the things Ive personally said about rippy 'behind his back' I have and will say to his face. Sure I might word it a bit differently, but thats just respectful. I might say to my friend that my girlfreind can be such a fucking annoying bitch when shes pmsing. Ill tell her this to her face, but Im going to word it more like "baby, just sometimes when you get moody, it can be frustrating to deal with you." I said it to my freind, but I didnt put in the efffort to be eloquent with my words, I think its worth it to no make her feel like shit, and not feel her wrath, to be a lil more picky with the way I say it to her.

Your willingless to broadcast these IRC logs to others is the reason you were banned. That is the one and only thing I am going to say regarding IRC. Xianti I respect your ban on IRC drama, i'm posting this simply to set the record straight before even more side-drama unfolds, now i'm shutting up.

I never once accused you, boost, of saying anything behind his back. The way you worded that post comes across like you are trying to defend your actions. Did I ever once say you talked behind his back?

No irc drama. You asked when I provided you with an answer. Yes I have read the threads and everyone was running around like a bunch of misbehaved children that are pissed off they missed their naps. It takes a bigger person to not stoop to a lower level and make rude and inapropriate comments both to and about other people. I never said "oh everyone is being so mean to rippy it's so unfair". I do however believe that if you are going to act like a friend to someones face and then minute they are gone begin to speak badly about them then the character flaw is yours. You might want to re-examine the way you are acting.

Last time I checked the irc channel was public right? Did it all of the sudden change? The conversation in the channel is available to anyone who is in the channel is it not? The channel can be logged by anyone can it not? If it can be logged by anyone then at any point in time, any person can send any other person a log of the channel at any time. I happen to log irc. I didn't realize that the channel was some secret society where you need permission to speak.
