It would be if you think that two things would happen IN THE SAME GAME. For instance, I parlayed the over for the first quarter (10) in the Indy vs. St. Louis game while simultaneously backing Indy for the game.
I was just going to bet on the first quarter over, but I thought that it would be a forgone conclusion that Indy would win, so I tried increasing the payout a little. I didn't want to just take the winnings right after the first quarter and stick them back on the Colts because for all I knew before the game, the Colts would be ahead and the odds would have changed; that's why you use a parlay.
