It depends on your implied odds....say you and the original raiser have very deeeeeeep stacks...you can call a much larger raise if you feel that when you hit your set you will take his stack.
The implied odds you need are 8:1 I believe based on PFR compared to your stack and other peoples stacks........
Dont call large raises from shortstacks....but call up to 3xBB maybe 4 all the time as long as there are a few people in the pot.
At least those are my opinions
Just rember this:
If you have: 55
and they raise a little, they probally have some thing like JJ, AJ, AQ, ect...
if they raise a lot, they probally have something like AA, KK, QQ
Now when the flop is: 572
Who are you going to make money off of?
AJ or AA?
I'd rather play small pairs against a medium/big raise than a small one.
Just make the limit something like 1/15 of the smallest stack (between you and the raiser)
Anywhere up to 8xBB in small stakes NL ring.
...could someone recommend where on this website I should begin to get to know my way around this place?
Aloha from Sin City,
BWD
read all the articles in the poker strategy section, and then read all the stickies...
Then read both again.
there is a forum for each poker thing pretty much. mtt's, sng's, etc. holdem strategies are for general questions about poker. holdem hand histories are for asking questions about specific hands. community is where you post a naked picture of yourself (mandatory).
I recommend you start in beginners. start with the stickies there, then read the stickies everywhere else.
And, I will call with PP's so long as there is even the slimmest +EV for me. IMO, the bigger the raise, the more likely you'll destack them if you hit, so I will call basically any raise where I have the implied odds and think I will in turn get a much higher chance of destacking them.
Why 1/15?Quote:

If you think you can take his stack 100% of the time, then yes.Quote:

Yes, of course
I didn't think about factoring that in.
1/15 of the stack sounds lik a good system to me...thanks
Well we have a saying here in Vegas after a bad beat. WE call it
"Texas Hold Me" and help them find their happy place.
Pocket hooks(J)?! Daddy Likey But they can crash and burn and often do. Don't fall for the lowmid pocket pair syndrome. It's fools' gold.
But what do I know? I've only been playing this game for like...erm...2 weeks±
One of me is lying. Can you guess which?
Nice suit by the way. Does it come in your size?
5/10 rule.
5% of the smallest stack is ideal, 10% of the smallest stack is pushing breakeven at best.
1/10th of what you think your opponent will pay you off with if you hit your set. If the guy is a complete rock and won't pay off any suspicious raise, tone it down a notch. If the guy will put his entire stack in with AA or KK, regardless of the board and your betting patterns and you're sure he has AA or KK, then call up to 1/10 th of his stack.
Reason being you have a 1 in 8 chance of hitting that set, so when you do, you wanna get paid enough to offset you calling with PP preflop. I say to only call 10% because calling 13.5 (or whatever 8/100 is) would only be breakeven; I'd like to get paid a little bit more. :o)
