Players Abusing Players

Hi All,

I've been lurking here a while and thought it was time to introduce myself and ask a hopefully interesting question...

I'm interested to hear about your experiences playing on tables where two or more players (not me) seem to be abusing each other, this seems to be happening surprisingly often on the tables I'm currently playing at (starting on very low limit tables @ pokerchamps).

From what I've witnessed this seems to throw the players involved completely off their game, this might sound like a good thing but I seem to lose more than I win getting caught in between these players. My current strategy for this is to just find a calmer table.

On a similar note, when you beat someone and they criticise your play how do you respond - if at all? My theory on this is that it's probably best just to smile and then beat them again :D but I'm interested to know how others handle these situations.

sounds like good banter to me, as long as its not too abusive I like it, especially if it livens the table up.

I agree there's nothing wrong with a big of sledging (to borrow a cricket term :D ), but the stuff I'm talking about is just down right abusive and borders on childish. I have a feeling it's the cheap (micro limit) games I'm currently playing in.

If i beat him with good poker or good odds i laugh and tell him to go do his homework on why i was able to justify a call.
If someone makes a bad call and hits their draw i write something like
'thats a good call keep making it but next time i'll be all in'
i like them to think i think their a good player making the call, coz i'll then know he'll call anything on his draws.
As for two players abusing one another or fighting its class!
I just hang around and then come over the top of them every so often (i find they like to get one another heads up and take each other out)
This works great as their cards get thrown away and i pick up a nice pot.
If i picked up a big hand i just wana see a flop then its clear out time.
I just love the banter between some of em though

If you can use their little "chat spat" to your advantage then do so. If not then just ignore it or turn the chat off. If I'm at a juicy table w/asses why leave(unless it throws you off your game - then definitely leave). Normally if I'm playing ring I'm multitabling so I don't have time to pay attention to chat anyway. If chat is tilting these guys that should be good for you - no?

I'm not a banter guy. The only time I reply to chat is if I think someone's comment may influence people to think about my table image in a way I don't want them too.

If thats your goal then I don't think you are saying the right things. I would interpret your comment as "You suck at poker and I'll take your money in the long run so keep doing it."

You might want to leave it at "Good call" or "Nice one".

It only gets worse at more serious stakes. People get genuinely angry with each other. I try to keep people in a good mood, but there's always that douchebag who doesn't get it.

My favorite scenerio involves you hitting one of your 23,353 outs and they go "Nice suckout asswipe. Why would you stay in with that junk?" "Well I had a flush draw, a straight draw, a straight flush draw, 2 impending full houses, and 353 overcards genius."

I fall into the line of occassionally chastising opponents for bad play. Sometimes because I am mad, others because I am genuinely bewildered. I use the Socratic method, lol.

My general line: "Is there any special reason you called my bet on the flop with 8 high? I mean, besides your runner runner flush outs?"

or "Is there any special reason you thought I didn't have a good hand when I bet at you? I mean, after all, I am in just 17% of pots?"

Bottom line, I know I want those players to continue calling me with nothing in the long run. But I play poker to relax and have a good time, and losing a pot I should win makes me angry. It helps me vent a little to ask what they were thinking. Most often they do not reply, sometimes you will be surprised and laugh your butt off at what they have to say.

When I see people yelling at fish, I mark them as fish as well. If you can't handle a beat, you aren't as good as someone who can.

I too agree. Whether or not someone sucked out and beat ya, it doesn't matter. The fact remains, you still lost the hand. Not sure why people feel the need to type profanities to the other player. If the call was indeed a suckout, you know it will come back to haunt that person.

How I handle the situation depends on how they handle it. Some apologize or at least recognize they sucked out and then my response is a simple 'nh'. If the response is "Wow, I am the best player ever ... " which happened when I lost an all-in call with AAs to 88s ... my response was, you are the best. Please do not leave until I can learn from you. :twisted:

Why advertise you are a good player? Let them think you are bluffing when you raise. Let them think you are a fish calling down with your 47 outs. The worse they think you play, the better.

Say "nh" when they beat you with bad odds because poker karma will return the money to you with interest.

I've had guys cuss me out several times. I've been called a donkey, an idiot and a motherXXXXer on several occassions. I've even been cussed out when I try to bluff someone and they call me. I'm sure some of it is playing the game but there are those (probably somewhat intoxicated) individuals who get out of hand. It's tempting to chat back at them but I feel that would just hurt my concetration so I just keep quiet.
