What it everyones opinion on trying to check -raise on the river when you have the nuts to win a big pot and risking only winning a small pot??
Or is it better to just make a bet and try to extract a decent amount of money from your oppenent?

Depends on your opponent and the previous action in the hand....Quote:

But thats just me.
I'm a big fan of check raising on the river with the nuts, but it does all depend on who you're playing. If you're playing very low stakes, I check raise all the time, because it pisses people off and they call out of anger. In the higher stakes games, USUALLY the players are a bit smarter and won't call. And actually check raising doesn't make people fold, it's how much you raise after the check.
it depends on several factors..you cant generalize and always check or always bet..for example your chasing a gut shot straight(u shouldnt do this but w/e) and ur checking and he is consistently betting...on the river you hit your card, here you should check and he would probably bet again, so u can now check raise. On other situations it would be better to bet it..so it depends

unless i am against a maniac I will always bet the river.
if you have the nuts i will almost never check unless i think the person will try to make a play.

check raising the river is one of the most -EV plays you can make, unless your opponent is extremely predictable. in my experience, at least.
If you have been leading out up until the river, keep leading out, they won't put you on your hand. If you have been passive (bad), up until the river and you are against a hyper aggressive player who will continuously bet with nothing, a check/raise is ok. I tend to avoid check raises unless the field is moderately big and the person to my immediate left bets and everyone calls, then I trapped every player into calling
