slump recovery.

i have hit a major slump over the last 30 SNGs that is now beginning to threaten my bankroll stability. before the last 30, i feel that i was doing quite well. above average to be sure. but this slump is really killing me. out of the 30 games i have no first place finishes, a couple of 2nds a maybe 3 thirds. i have finished OOTM the last 10 games. i was averaging 1st about 25% of my ITM before this crappy run.

i know that 30 SNGs is not that many, but it has been a real dry run. i am starting to get a bit frustrated.

i have been looking over my histories, but i can't seem to find any glaring leaks. any ideas of what i should look for?

is this a situation where i need to think about moving back down a level? i really hate to do that, but i might be forced to because of my dwindling bankroll.

I would definitely drop down if you don't have 20 buyins or feel comfortable anymore... You don't want to be playing with scared money.

Look for places where you bleed too many chips early and have to play shortstacked once the blinds hit 50/100.

I hit a mini-skid last week and at first glance I felt that I was doing my best to play good poker but I re-examined and found that I was limping in more often early on and bleeding chips. I also found that I made a couple of plays that were not smart....trying to force some things. You need to just re-re examine and see if there are some things you could do.

If you are really running cold and also getting sucked out etc. then just keep forging ahead, those things will change.

what $$ level?
I've had a couple downswings of 30 or so, if it was a leak I fixed it without knowing it.... if I remember I'll check at home but really I think I've had a streak of 50 or so where I was way down... then a couple of stretches of running uber g00t, now I'm in a nicely comfy gradual upswing.

oops.....i thought i put that info in there. i have been playing 33ers at party.

thanks for the input.....i will take it all into account. i think i really need to pore over my hand histories and get this all sorted out. i can remember a couple of plays i made where i was left banging my head on the table at how stupid it was.......but only a couple of them. i will re-evaluate my play and look for those boderline situations that don't stand out in my memory.

well I lied, worst stretch was 18 in a row OTM, also had one 1 for 19 spot. But the first streak did help me fix a leak... weak tightness. This was end of 04 and I had mostly quit playing, sick of all the bad beats. Re read SS, came back playing cash games with a new agg style... back to SNGs by middle of Feb.

i love SS. reading the parts by brunson is like hearing your grandfather tell a great story.

18 in a row.......that is rough. i thought my record of 12 was unbearable. i can see why you took a break. sounds like it was the right thing to do, though. i have been contemplating moving back to ring games for a while, then coming back fresh to tourneys. in my experience it helps to play those different styles to sort out the weak spots.

30-40 buyin downswings are supposedly not uncommon for winning players on party sngs, so you have to have the bankroll and then mental discipline to deal with the swings.

you are saying the 30-40 buyin swing is specific to party? is that because of the starting chips and blind structure? if so, where do you like to play.......i have been thinking about playing at a few other places, but just can't decide where to move some money.

on the other hand, if you can have a 30-40 buyin downswing, i would assume you could have the same upswing as well.

i'd suggest looking for a post phlegm made about sng variance, it links to an article on the 2+2 forums and has a program that you can download and take a look at that really shows how common swings in sngs are. especcially if you play around and set different roi %, you can see a huge difference. at about 20-30% roi, 10-20 buy-in downswings aren't very uncommon. party sngs really lead to a lot of variance because when it gets to the bubble you end up getting all-in a lot more often that sngs on others sites due to the structure of party. this leads to getting into a lot of race situations. this probably accounts for more variance than sngs on other sites. party sngs are frustrating but take a lot of patience and a bankroll that can handle the large swings.
