Default Gauntlet VIII Format Discussion: The Games

The FTR Gauntlet VIII will be up and running shortly. Huzzah!

If you're unfamiliar with how the Gauntlet has run in the past, read the rules from the previous seasons here: http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...te-t60313.html

Last Gauntlet saw the addition of a number of variant events, including 6-max NL, HU NL and Omaha Hi/Lo. Please comment on if you would like to see variants again and which variants in particular.

Also comment on the number of events. Was 32 too many? Is a return to 24 events appropriate?

What really is the point of the Guantlets? To find this years best overall tourney player then we need at least one of each FR, 6-max, limit if available, couple of HU.

To Just have a bunch of fun playing tourneys? Mostly holdem, in as many formats as are available, and a few of the others mixed in for effect. (Shootouts, HU Tourneys, 6max, FR, Limit)
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

Synopsis of discussion below is a follows:

    - I prefer a mix of NLHE games - 6max, HU, Shootout, etc
    - Reduce number of games back to 24
    - Reduce maximum games from 12 to 10

I seriously doubt I would play in any other non HE event other than maybe PLO as I just don't have any interest in them (and I wouldn't even play PLO if I had a shot at finishing top 3). IMO we definitely shouldn't have any format that doesn't even have its own forum on the site.

One of the things that we need to determine is the overall goal of The Gauntlet. If it is a representation of the best tourney player at FTR then you should run it with some format where you play a mix of games (such as NL, limit, PL, PLO, 7 card stud, etc.) but the number of games are equal for each style.

On the other hand, if the tourney is to determine the best NLHE player then you keep it to that format and put in games like 6max, HU and shootout formats. Note that this would be my preference.

Also, as for the number of tournies I definitely think 32 was too much and would like to get back to 24. I also think we may want to look at dropping the max number of games played (like maybe from 12 to 10 in a 24 game format). Traditionally it has been half of the total, but that means if I can NEVER make a Wed or Sun game (like maybe one of the games are during work hours where I live) it would be hard to win as I don't think we have ever had a winner that did not play all of the games possible.

Typically, I'm with the reigning old man champ ^^^^

I'm happy to play different formats for the fun aspect but Holdem needs to be the mainstay to keep the broad appeal.

I vote for HU, 6max, HORSE, PLO hi, and PL5CD (but there probably isnt enough interest for 5CD.)

i'll play anything, we should at least have 1 horse event even if the rest is HE, I know the PLO8 games last year did not go over well

I thought this was a great question but hasn't really generated any responses. What would people like the Gauntlet to be?

I think it should be a competition of general Poker skill and not just NLHE skill.

Personally I don't think we have a broad enough skill level in non NLHE games to drive attendance in a league. IMO, playing games like 7 card stud and HORSE where you have less than 5-10 regs on this site would turn the league into a crap shoot for the majority of people here.

yeah I love HORSE and everything, but I know I suck at it. I would only play that particular event if I knew for sure that I was out of the running for the title.

Agree... I think it would be fun to pull off some random private game of this type at some point, but underlying all the fun of the gauntlet is the urge to ACTUALLY take home the trophy. So let's try to organize some other fun games outside the guantlet, but keep the tourney as srsbsnss (well as serious as ridiculing, mocking, and embarrassing yur e-freends in the hold them pokers).

btw, I'm very happy the radamins are taking interest in tweaking this to suit the community, I didn't participate in the last gauntlet due to the "best 16 of 32" structure, and knowing i'd be highly unlikely to compete.
