Default Celebrating 1 Million Posts with Team PokerStars!

As FTR is reaching 1 million posts, we would like to celebrate by having some members of Team PokerStars post in our forum. We have received this general Q&A from our forum members and hope any pros are able to take the time to respond to some of the community questions. Even just a quick congratulations would be great too!

    --------

    Question 1:
What do you feel are a few of the most common beginner mistakes?

    Question 2:
Any quick advice for those starting their poker journey? Anything you can share about your story?

    Question 3:
Who are some of the toughest player's you've faced, online or live?

    Question 4:
How do you tell when someone is playing back at you vs caught a hand?

    Question 5:
What do you think the future holds for online poker?

    --------

Congratulations FTR and special thanks to Team PokerStars!

Note - We welcome any discussion from FTR and Team PokerStats but please don't expect the pros to answer questions or replies posted in this thread. That is what the other threads were for asking for questions. Thanks!

Hello guys this is my first time posting here. It's my 5th year attending the WSOP, and it's always a pleasure to meet new people at the table and share stories of different nature. I will happily answer questions you guys have for me, so post up!

well if youve been playing a lot of pots at the table and it seems like another big stack at the table has as well, then chances are hes trying to keep you in line.

Welcome and thanks for the post! I hope the WSOP is going well for you this year.

You're known for being able to multi-table a lot, how do you deal with the slowness of live poker?

Howdy to all you FTR regs, and congrats on reaching such a big milestone.

I'll take a stab at the first question from OP.

The biggest mistake that beginners make (as well as very good players) is simply playing too many hands. When you watch us on a TV poker show, it seems like we're playing every hand. But they edit out anywhere from 50-99% of the hands, depending upon the show. There are times, like if you're chip leader on the bubble, where it can be correct to play a lot of hands. But long term average, you're probably only supposed to be in there between 10-20% of the time at a full table of 9-10 players. If you're seeing more flops that this, it is definitely time to review your starting hand selection, and see if you shouldn't stop playing some of those hands.

Hey Greg, I am from the CT Area(Actually Shrewsbury MA) and visit Foxwoods on occusion. How often do you play there?

My question is, What has been the hardest part of their poker journey and how you overcame that to be successful?

I moved to Raleigh, NC in late 2005, so I don't get to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun very much anymore. I've been renting my house in Stonington (6 miles from Foxwoods) until recently, and am now selling it. Want to buy a house near both casinos?

The hardest thing to overcome is the negative emotional impact of running bad. Everybody runs bad at times, and if you play long enough, you'll eventually hit a period where you run bad for a LONG time (months upon months live, weeks even for a high volume online player). It is times like these that test your ability to continue to play your best game.

Unfortunately, I have no great advice for how to do this. Different things work for different people. My personal method is to just take some time, chill out, and think to myself if I should have done something different. If so, I can use this as a learning experience. If not, if I played the hand as correctly as I could, then I must remember that variance is part of the game, and I just have to continue to play the cards as perfectly as possible, and that eventually I will start winning again.
