The best way to develop your film chops is to pick out a few filmmakers and really watch and understand all of their films. Here are a couple of essentials you should check out:

Stanley Kubrick: every single one of his movies are great, although some are kinda inaccessible (i.e. acquired taste)

P.T. Anderson: Magnolia and Boogie Nights are probably both in my top ten of films, his other 3 films are very good as well, although they are slightly less accessible.

Coen Brothers: all of their movies are good, but they have a weird habit of cranking out a fucking amazing film (i.e. Fargo, No Country for Old Men), and then putting out a couple of clunkers in comparision before making their next absolute masterpiece.

    Martin Scorsese: needs no description

Charlie Kaufman: he's a screenwriter, not a director. Adaptation is in my top 5 of movies probably. Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich are also essential.

I highly recommend this, its a pretty abstract animated film, but its really awesome. If you smoke this is def a must see, if not well I still highly recommend it because its a really interesting "out of hte box" piece of cinema.

    The Last Action Hero
    Doomsday

Dunno how Pulp Fiction is lumped in the flop/not performing section. The film cost $8m and recouped $108m in the US alone in 1994.
By comparison, Iron Man, considered a hit in 2008, cost $140m and returned $318m in the US.

Phenomenal film that tanked spectacularly at the box office. Thankfully, video came to its rescue and it now has its rightful place as one of the greatest moooovies ever. Can't believe I left it off my original list.

Bloodsport...11.8M for the movie that started Van Damme's career.

Poolhall Junkies lost money (4M budget, 1/2M take) but is basically "Rounders" for anyone that plays pool.

I thought Doomsday was pretty terrible, but I did not like Mad Max that much either.
