What is your job?

    Default What is your job?

Anyone here full time on the poker? Or was anyone full time playing poker then decided to stop and get back into a steady job?

If not what is your day job whilst you aim towards your goals in poker?

I work for British Gas, probably one of the most hated companies in the UK but it funds my life and my bankroll if I am ever to lose it ha ha (hopefully never again)

I played full-time from Jan '05 to Dec '08. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have crossed over into the "normal job" region when I did, because I was no longer putting in the effort to keep pace with the competition. I know several players who had way more talent than I do/did, who wound up going busto because they refused to be honest with themselves about their work (poker) habits.

Poker is a great game, it has been great to me (both at and away from the tables), and I believe my results were in-line with my long-term EV over the course of roughly 2 million hands. There's nothing wrong with playing full-time... it's just that if a player goes that route, serious dedication is required to be successful over any meaningful amount of time.

I compare it (and just about any project) to the old-school Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid (80s version). You POKER YES... good. You POKER NO... good. You POKER SO-SO... squish, just like grape.

I play the violin in an orchestra of an opera company. No, I guess it isn't really a normal job.

Aircraft engineer for almost 7 months now. Just got done retrofitting a new plane. Tomorrow or the day after I'll be on its first flight. So I could be going to India, Turkey or Greece, don't know yet. I made some good money on poker but nothing spectacular. Now living in Dubai where all of gambling is banned so no more of that. Even FTR is banned there (damn illegal gambling website!), which I'm circumventing by being in Qatar atm. Wait maybe I can play poker here too.. I should try that.

Is it policy that you have to go on the first flight if you build it or is that just a coincidence? haha cool job mate

Couldn't live in Dubai myself don't like their way of life I would feel imprisoned and would probably end up in jail for drinkin a tin of beer walkin down the street or somethin

It's not a new aircraft though, a retrofit means we upgraded the avionics. I'm overseeing it for the engineering department because it's a first of type and that's why I'll be on the first flight. I spent most of january and february flying the new aircrafts with the newest systems. The airlines in the Middle East are expanding like crazy. If there's one thing they have over here it's money to spend.

And I know what you mean, I was hesitant to go live in Dubai at first but a childhood friend of mine had been living there for 8 years so he convinced me. And I may grow bored of it but atm I love it. You can truly live like a god in France there, or however that expression goes. I mean, unless you don't like luxury, money and women. You need to behave in public but heck, I even have my own driver. It's hard work at times but expats have all left their homes so it's like one big family which is cool. I'm tired of all the traveling now though, I hope I can take a breather for at least a month after this.

2007 was a rough year for me personally. I had a bad recovery period from having my gall bladder removed & hiatal hernia (acid reflux) removed, and finalized my divorce in December -- about 1 week after I stopped playing full time and started working a "regular" job.

Looking back on it, I'm glad I went through that... it definitely brought me closer to my kids. I wasn't very happy about it at the time though, and needed time to adjust to the changes in my personal life.

Sounds like a nice place to live indeed, definately a place I will visit at least once in my life.

Sorry to hear man what do you work as at the moment and do you still play recreational poker? And will you be playing tonight in the tourney?

I used to play a lot of poker a long time ago, used to be a winner as well, but i never had the passion needed to become a great player.

Now, i have a farm (bought it with poker winnings) and trade stocks since 2013.

I have an interview to be a "physics demonstration technician" at Washington University in a few hours.

It is kind of a dream job for me at this time. I get to re-insert myself back into the academic world, while playing with fun toys and talking about physics to people who will listen. I mean... so much win for me.

It's just a first interview, but I am excited about being employed again... finally in my field for the first time... doing something that I am really motivated to do.

    Anyway... Woohoo!

Obv a toilet isn't a necessary requirement, but I imagine you'd want to do it somewhere private and a toilet is a convenient place to do it.

I don't know what in the world a "power position" is. I imagine it's me pumping my fists in the air. IDK.

Anyhoo. I feel like I nailed it. It was a 2 hour long interview and I had them smiling most of the time. I even pointed them here to read my physics monkey thread to demonstrate my dedication to spreading the physics love. I hope it doesn't backfire.

Feeling on top of the world right now, even though my car got towed by the city while I was at the interview. Apparently they gave me 4 parking tickets that never materialized under my windshield wiper... assholes... still... top of the world for now.

Nice one on the interview. You've taken the towing incredibly well.

They're going to end up hiring Renton instead because they like his keen attitude in that thread to learn more and not hire you because your Werewolf game is lacking.
