I've done some pretty shameful things in my life, but enjoying a Coldplay gig is probably the most shameful.

I was high on drugs, the sun was setting behind the stage, I'd just seen Faithless who were amazing, I could probably have enjoyed screeching banshees. But it's no excuse, and I'll never forgive myself.

I did a binge of Tori Amos the other weekend while playing Factorio and it was excellent. Followed it up with some Tool and had a great day.

You might not think it matters now,
but what if you are wrong?
You might not think there's any wisdom
in a fucked up punk rock song,
but the way it is will not persist for long.
A brutal sun is rising on a sick horizon.

    It's in the way
    we live our lives
exactly like the double edge of a cold, familiar knife.
    Supremecy weighs heavy on today.
It's never really what you own,
    but what you threw away,
and how much did you pay?

The process of belief is an elixir when you're weak.
I must confess, at times, I indulge it on the sneak,
but generally, my outlook's not so bleak.

    I'm materialist.
    a full blown realist
I guess I'm full of doubt, but I'll gladly have it out with you.
    I'm materialist.
    I ain't no deist.

Did you listen to that Shadow tune above? Possibly the best opening lyrics to a song that I've heard...

    Picture this

    RTJ are pretty good.

Tierra Whack is promising... I don't think she has a full album out yet. Worth listening to more than one song. She has a pretty wide range for a teenager.

I'm a bit late on the Dinosaur Jr train... which is weird... I listened to The Notwist in the 90's but somehow missed Dinosaur Jr's.

Is Dinosaur Jr. still around? I listened to them in the 90's. J. Mascus is a phenomenal guitarist. Hard to find too many people laying down the stuff he does AND sing over it. Normally if you have a guitarist that talented, they don't approach a mic.

DOMi vid: The drummer is about 10x better than the keys. IDK. Maybe it was just that piece.
The keys were so rhythmically bland. It's like the drummer's throwing all the options over, but the keys are just not having it.
Sure... the spicey chords are something. Not saying the keys were bad... just not on par with the drums.

The drummer is insane for a 15yo but that doesn't mean the 16yo on keys is any less impressive.

That kid's got potential, but his timing's all over the place. The bass line is amazing, and he's really close to it, but he's just a bit ahead of the beat in some places and behind it in others.

I love it when he locks in, though, and his head nods are so extreme.

Whoever recorded that video needs a lesson in mixing. All I can hear is bass and some faint sounds in the background.

Kids pretty good for 6 or 8 or whatever though.

And if we're talking about great lyricists, I don't think anyone beats Neil Young:

"Old man look at my life
twenty-four and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise that makes me think of two
    Love lost such a cost
Give me things that don't get lost
Like a coin that won't get tossed
    Rolling home to you
    "

    or

"We got a thousand points of light for the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler, machine gun hand
Keep on rockin' in the free world"

    or

    "My my, hey hey
rock and roll is here to stay
it's better to burn out than it is to rust
    my my, hey hey"

    or

    "I was down in Dixieland
    played a silver fiddle
played it loud and then the man
    broke it down the middle
    "

or possibly the best line of all time

"This old world keeps spinnin' round
It's a wonder tall trees ain't laying down
    There comes a time"

It is a wonder tall trees ain't laying down. Atmospheric pressure can only lift water about 34 feet. Plants typically suck from the leaves, rather than pump from the roots. This puts a height limit of ~34' on the tallest plants. However, plenty of trees are taller than this. They don't have high pressure pumps in their roots. How they do it is quite interesting.

I can dig punching baby bears in the shit, though. So credit where it's due for RTJ, they write great lyrics.

The entire album was made by samples, the first such album. There's an orchestra that performs the album using just instruments, they're magnificent.

Here's them doing the tune above...

    Awesome drummer.

The group I've enjoyed most consistently last year was Death Grips. I was late on the Death Grips train even though I liked Hella and I liked a couple other Zach Hill projects.

That was the downfall of the Brent On The Road movie. The songs were too good and it hurt the comedy. There's no situation where I'm alone in a car and not singing Freelove Freeway to myself.

Those 2 hits on "8 and" of the count are unforgettable.

    1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 +

I had to google it because I knew I'd heard that one before. It was in the movie "Road Trip."

If I said it's like a muted, distorted, MIDI-clavichord-y sound that goes "bom bom" at the end of every riff (loop),

would that have been any better?

This guy is blowing up the past couple weeks. If you haven't heard of him, yet. Check this shi-it out!

He doesn't fret a single note. It's all done with harmonics and the pitch bending tuners.
Hitting the super high notes up near the nut, and then later his right hand technique over the pickups is just epic.

Sorry to the non-guitarists for that, but for you all: notice that he's only just barely touching the strings the entire time.

I don't think I'm being silly when I say these 2 are of the same caliber of virtuoso.

It kinda triggers my 'old guy' though.
Do you really need to play the same measure 4 times in a row? Oh now the next measure gets 4 times, too?

Also, I have other emotions aside from hyper-mania, so why is it every song these days thinks the only way to increase tension is by increasing metric subdivisions? I.e. there are other ways to increase tension aside from increasing the number of notes per bar.

That's mostly tongue-in-cheek criticism. I have to listen to a song more than 1 or 2 times to know how I really feel about it, and those 2 critiques are my standard, "This is new and different, but these damn kids still think playing faster is adding emotional content." response.
You can find any pattern you want to any level of precision you want, if you're prepared to ignore enough data.

    ^ More or less agree.

It's impressive to listen to someone play super fast, but that's often irrelevant to how good a song is.

Seems like some guys think the goal of a musician is to be faster than anyone else. There is good music that is also fast, so it's good to be able to play fast, but at some point it reaches a speed where the sound just becomes a blur and you can't really process it. That's not "good music" imho, it's just a guy playing really fast. Also, nowadays you can get a synth to play any speed you want it to, so musicianship has to revolve around more nuanced skills like timing and volume control.

Yngwe Malmstein is my favourite example of super fast but otherwise unimpressive. It's just not music I want to listen to, so after I hear it once I go 'well done', but I don't want to go buy his records.

Eddie van Halen's "Eruption" is another where you kind of go 'aaah, that's fast', but it's not really much of a piece of music in any other way. His "best" songwriting AND guitaring imo are evident on a lot of other songs - Pretty Woman, Ain't Talking 'Bout Love, or Jamie is Crying all spring to mind.

It's largely because the electronica is so good that I do like it. I kinda agree about playing fast for the sake of it, but if you're going to create beats and breaks to fit, then I'm interested. If you don't particularly like elec, then Squarepusher isn't for you!

That is the second worst criticism of Hard Normal Daddy I have ever heard.
I would say a lot of times in electronic music you have the drums taking the role of the melody while bass or melody takes the role of keeping time like this:

So complaining that the melody is simplistic is besides the point because it's not in focus.

But on HND everything is working together and every track is a meticulously written out piece where hardly anything repeats. If it did I would still defend it.

It's not all fast bass playing. Some of Hard Normal Daddy is a little more melodic.

The best music to listen to if you don't think you like electronica but you want to be sure is probably Aphex Twin, but you have to be selective because he's diverse as fuck, and some of his stuff is really spazzy, while other tracks are beautifully ambient. That one oskar posted is definitely an easy listening one though.

If you've got ten minutes and want a peek into the twisted side of Aphex Twin...

Lauro wrote some great melodies that are in perpetual motion, and aren't at 1000 bpm,

I think electronica is mainly for zoning out on when you're stoned. I don't think it's very interesting musically. There's some interesting ideas in it but as a whole it is boring music, sorry.
