Default What do you do for work besides poker - you know, real jobs

I myself don't do anything besides poker and casino whoring at the moment. I will hopefully be working in the skydiving industry in the next couple years. I may end up converting my Bachelors degree in business management & administration to a teaching degree so I can always have summers off and stuff.

Well besides Low Limit Hold'em and giving Boondock topics to post in the Community forum:

I'm an Art Director at an Advertising Agency in Dallas, Texas. Which means, I come up
with/design commercials, prints ads, and billboards, along with a good bit of junk mail

I've been wondering for a while what folks do around here, because I'm wondering if my right-brained tendencies are all wrong for this silly game- as most people around here seem to be software folks, engineers, and other solid brain folks.

I'm an Art Director as well and have been an artist since I first picked up a crayon.

But I have a unique mix of right- and left-brain tendencies. I'm very analytical and logical... to the point of surprising a lot of my designer colleagues because I think like Spock and am not very emotional.

I am a server at Red Robin and will be trying to become a math teacher when I feel like starting my career. however, when you don't want to get married or have kids there's really no rush. And I'll probably go to University of Washington or Western washington University when I want to get everything rolling (I'm 21).

I'm a Philosophy major at Lenoir-Rhyne College in NC. I also play college golf. More than likely I will simply continue my education and become a college professor, I feel that's my calling, but I am highly considering playing some of the mini-tours and seeing where that takes me. Right now, I'm an office lackey making $9 an hour doing what ever they tell me while sitting on my ass. As strange as this will sound, I also work at the 3rd largest Lutheran church camp in the USA during the summers, the pay isn't amazing but the job certainly is.

The plan is that music will support poker until till poker starts supporting music.. at which point i will be spending well over 100K on a piano

    I'm a physician and wannabe screenwriter/novelist.

I'm glad someone started this thread so I didn't have to.

One followup question for those who care to answer: do you feel that poker playing takes something out of what you do otherwise? Maybe it's because I'm only 6 months into playing and have to devote more time to learning to play than the rest of you, but I feel like creatively I've gone into a tailspin. Just wondering if anyone else has felt that poker has displaced energies that used to go into something else.

I've sturggled with this a little. The question for me is, would working at subway take up the same time (probably more), pay less, and make you more miserable? The answer is yes so I'm glad I'm sticking with poker.

I work with two developers that used to commute to NYC and worked in the finance sector, for reuters and merill lynch. Seems to be a pretty demanding job. Neither of my coworkers have great things to say about their former jobs other than the high salaries.

They were both in charge of some important aspects of their respective software I believe. There was little margin for error. The one that worked at merrill did say that there were a lot of slackers. He worked their years ago though.

Except when you're mired in a bad streak.
In an upswing-- hell yea, why wouldn't you play poker?
But when I'm in a downswing, it just makes me wonder. This week I thought to myself, "Hmm, I just knocked about 15 hours off my life sitting on my ass in front of the computer and and addition to that got to pay 100BB for the privilage!"

I was the Director of IT for a skincare company.

    http://www.quest.com/news/show.aspx?...TypeId=2&site=

Walked away from that job about 6 months ago to be self-employed. Now I just work on FTR, some other websites, and invest in real estate (and drink, smoke, poker, xbox, travel around the world). I bought my first rental property last year. I sold it this year and made over $200k. I made more on that one transaction than I did working my monkey job for an entire year. And I was a pretty big monkey. No more pages at 3:00am from our server room because the temperature is too high, no more politics and bullshitting, no more night-terrors and anxiety attacks. I realized that there are easier ways to make money. After 10 years of that shit, I finally feel relaxed.

I can go on and on about setting yourself up. A lot of you guys are in college which is a great thing. There are steps you have to go through. I graduated from UCLA (business economics & specialization in computer programming). Get a degree, get a good job, then really utilize those dollars to your benefit (save & invest!). After a while, you may not need that job any longer. Passive income - this is when you're making money, but don't have to work for it. A couple examples - I love the insurance business model - sign someone up for insurance, and then just get the checks every month, year after year (hopefully). You put in the effort to get that client once, but after that, it's all gravy. Produce a book, software program, etc. once, and receive licensing fees for a long time. Buy a rental property, receive rent checks.

Sorry for the babbling. Money isn't everything... but it allows you freedom and time. Those are priceless.

For all you business folk, I have a reading recommendation: The Poker MBA by Greg Dinkin and Jeffery Gitomer.

The book does an excellent job of taking the the aspects that define a winning poker player applying them to negotiating, reading people, decision making, ethics, etc. You can read much better reviews on amazon than I can give, but I think pretty much anyone can appreciate the concepts presented even if you aren't the greatest poker player or have an MBA yourself.

I am called a Senior Design Engineer. Graduated a BS (That's Bachelor of Science, not BullShit) in Mechanical Engineering at Penn State in 1988. What I do is tough to explain, can seem boring but is actually a very cool job.

I Design Engineered Inflatable Products. Products where I am/was a cog in the design flow that y'all may be familiar with are:
The Advertising Airships over football games
The Mars Landing Bags (if not for sterility requirements, my genetic material could be on Mars)
    Shuttle Space Suit components
Defensive Airship bourne Radar systems (the airship, not the radar)

I usually create tooling/templates/patterns for manufacturing but am often in system integration as well.

I use ProEngineer Software (probably more proficient that 99% of users out there) and am just ramping up on SolidWorks. Also used CADDS5 a LOT and get stuck using AutoCAD sometimes since it is so prevalent in the Design industries.
Been playing money poker for 34 years and decided in 2002 to try that TX Holdem game on TV. Then found Pokerstars in Summer 2005. Still not an overall winner but i am on a good trend and nearly there.

I'm a Programmer Analyst / DBA for a meduim sized company, and a have a couple side hustles as well...

I'll venture into your question a bit, cause it's something that I feel has negatively affected my production in every other area of my life. (As long as my boss isn't gonna read this anyway...) I always feel that I want to be the best at anything I do, and once I caught on to this game, my life took a drastic change. All spare time and energy were devoted to learning and playing this game. I felt that I have above average intelligence when it comes to math, plus a little bit of self-taught psycology, which played perfectly into being great at playing poker. I'm not sure where this is going, but all I know that instead of reading up on the latest application development techniques, I'll happily read Card Player Mag or spend all day on FTR instead. I keep telling myself it will all payoff someday (which it is definitely starting to...) but my future is really unclear. My desire to develop custom applications and solve business problems has been replaced by the desire to be the best poker player that I can be. I don't want to be a full time poker player, I just want to be able to play large enough stakes to make a nice consistent side income. Or do I? Will the day come when my brain no longer thrives for poker, and I can focus my energy on more productive life goals? HellifIknow. And this doesn't even address the issues with your significant other... anything that takes time away from them "is the devil". This game is so so gay, yet I love it so much. (does that make me gay??) Too much of anything is a bad thing. Sorry for rambling, but yes, if you are devoted and really like /love the game, then some other part of your life will take a hit. The true challenge is figuring out how to balance everything, which I am still trying to figure out at this moment. OK back to work, **sigh**

Hehe. I wasn’t going to respond because I am fairly uninteresting overall but my situation is the antithesis of everything you mention so I had to post.

I am a 40 year old programmer analyst / DBA / query writer / report writer for a dental insurance co. I have a wife and two kids and have been through the .com programmer crash…and came out of it with a job…barely. After that I am just happy to have a well paying job even if it is boring as hell. I spend 8 hrs (the min) a day at a job that requires about 1 hr a day. Poker playing at home has replaced World of Warcraft and before that Everquest. I need a hobby (poker) to take up the evening hrs that my kids are asleep. Whatever hobby I am involved in takes up the other 7 hrs a day at work so reading FTR gives me something to do with my time.

So unlike you where poker takes time away from other things, for me it gives me something to do.

I am a custom software designer. I was the head of the software department for a small company in the golf industry for 15.5 years. I left there to work with a friend in another industry. Now I am basically a code jockey, but now I don't have the polical crap and employees to put up with. Plus we both like poker. I only play about 1 to 1.5 hours a night after the kids go to bed. My wife is a graphic artist who works from home, so I guess we have the left and right brain stuff all covered.
