    Default Wet Shaving

Thought this might be interesting for some of you:

How to get that perfect shave - Today, Weekend Edition - TODAYshow.com

I came across this article as I was doing research on how to reduce shaving irritation. I did some more research specifically about wet shaving and decided to give it a try a few months ago.

My conclusion: it works darn well. If anyone regularly gets shaving irritation (for me it was mostly on my neck and under my jaw line) then consider giving this a try. Or, if you'd like to get better/closer shaves and enjoy the process of shaving more, consider giving it a try. FYI there's a ton of resources out there besides just this article.

On a side note, I did a quick search before creating this thread to see if anyone had posted about this before. No one had but I did find the ball shaving thread which is absolutely hilarious and interestingly also contains some useful info. Search for it here on FTR if interested.

Genuine badger hair shaving brushes come in all sizes and hair types, costing anywhere from $25 for a basic pure-grade badger model to $550 for a monster-sized, high-end English hand-made job containing only the hair from the badger’s neck, which is said by some (though not by me) to be the finest and most rarefied expression of water-holding bristle known to man or badger.

I've had several electrics, always gifts though, so not sure of their quality. Either way, they have all been terrible... like I haven't got one shave out of any. They left me all patchy and whatnot.

Yea I have been shaving in the shower forever, since I have also been shaving my head for 12 years or more. I have an electric for my face but with electric there is a breaking in period for your skin, you need to use it consistently, and every time you stop using it for a bit you need to get used to again.

I use a large hand mirror to see, just hanging upside down on a shower hook. Use a little soapy water and rinse and it stays clear for the whole shower.

I also mentioned in the "balls" thread, using cheaper cream rinses instead of shave creams is sometimes better for your skin, I have used it to shave my head almost always, but use a good Dermatologica shave product on my face lately becasue they are free. I haven't paid for shave products for 4 years since my wife's best friend is head of the Movember campaign in Canada

I got a philishave a few years ago and never looked back, it made me realise how ridiculously boring a chore shaving is.

It was only a £50 one so the shave isn't the closest, but a tiny bit of stubble is cool anyway

Ya, I just shave it all too, but I need to see. I guess I'll have to go pick up a shower mirror.

And ya, electric shavers... even good ones seem to leave a permo 5'oclock. If I'm gonna shave I like to be able to look like I just shaved, not like I shaved a day ago.

shower shaving is only way to go. you can hack away at your face or balls and get zero cuts

I gotta say, I saw this thread title and was like, "woohoo", and then read the thread and was like, totally deflated.

False advertising, imo. Please strike for OP.

wufwugy is correct. Any increased chance of cuts and other mistakes due to a lack of being able to see yourself is counterbalanced by the fact that running water grants your face the power of invincibility.

GL with the DE razors boys and girls. I've tried it once. I lost a lot of blood, but I have since recovered.
I switched to using a hair trimmer a couple of years back. I just trim it every other day and just shave the outlines so I don't look like chubaka, but I might give shaving a try again. Shaving every day got quite uncomfortable cos I have a lot of facial hair... I'm the Zach Galafiniakis type of guy facial hair wise.

    Not sure what you mean??

I think oscar probably has the best idea what exactly I'm talking about. Shaving with a brush and a quality cream and a Double Edge (DE) razor might sound really weird, that's what I thought when I first started learning about it. However, people have been shaving like this for years. All of your grandfathers have shaved this way at some point in their lives and this was how everyone shaved from 1900-1960 before the invention of the disposable and cartridge razor. Lots of people think that the 5 bladed razor/canned cream combo is basically a product of marketing and whether or not its actually a superior shaving method is questionable.

I've never tried shaving in the shower but lots of you seem to swear by it so I'll have to try it at some point. After reading through the ball shaving thread I was going to try it anyway lol.

Anyway, I was just curious what people's opinions would be on this topic. I plan to continue shaving this way because I get 0 irritation and the blades cost about $0.40 rather than $4.00/cartridge (plus I enjoy it).

Oscar, I'd suggest giving it another try. Yes, a DE blade is more dangerous and can cut you, but this shouldn't be a problem at all if you're using the right technique. I cut myself a few times when I was first starting but now I get NO cuts at all and I shave every other day.

Note that I have sensitive skin and have used electric for a while - you need to give it 30-45 days. I'm not sure if there's a skin acclimation process or what but the shave does get noticeably closer over that period of time.

I've tried going back to a normal blade and actually manage to get a closer shave now with the electric? :\

I must have just been given really crappy electric shavers as gifts, cuz these things left me PATCHY... it wasn't just not a close shave, it would be good in one spot and just not really get another spot unless I made 20 passes.. Idk, my mach3 isn't bad really, so I'm fine with it. However I may grab a mirror for the shower and a DE razor/shaving brush/good cream when I feel like blowing $100.

Oh and I did try shaving in the shower today without a mirror... the parts that I managed to shave did feel really close, but with a mirror I had all sorts of patches.. also I spent so much longer in the shower that I ran out of hot water!

i'll second electric shavers. way less irritation for me, 10x faster, not as close a razor shave but its only about 1 days difference in growth.

    mines a $70AU phillips.

This. Shaving in the shower is the best, 'cause you're lopping off that stubble at its max moisture content. All you need is soap and your razor blades last waaayyyy longer. Plus the little woman doesn't bitch about stubble in the sink.
