Default Week 8 NFL.. Lions blackout

    (sorry bob)

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/...appy-football/

The downtrodden Lions have enjoyed a sellout streak throughout the seven darkest years any NFL team has endured.

But the run ends Sunday, when the home game against the Redskins won’t appear on local television.

The Lions had previously sold out every game played at Ford Field, which opened in 2002. The run of 51 consecutive sellouts began with the final game of the 2001 season.

Asked about the possible non-sellout, Lions coach Rod Marinelli said, “No comment.”

Actually, he didn’t. Here’s what he said: “It’s our fault — that’s my fault. If we were playing better, and if we were executing better and we were winning more, then [the fans] would come.”

We appreciate Marinelli’s willingness to take the blame, but it’s not as if the Lions have been tearing it up for the past seven years. We think that the economy is factoring into the end of the streak, coupled with the fact that Ford Field has now been around long enough to have lost its novelty

A total of 5,000 tickets were unsold as of 72 hours before kickoff. No 24-hour extension was given, which seems to confirm something we heard earlier this year about this specific aspect of the process.

As the legend/theory/rumor goes, an extension is provided only if the team has already lined someone up (often, the local television station airing the game) to buy any leftover tickets. Then, a 24-hour extension is announced in the hopes of getting folks who really want to see the game to buy tickets under the premise that there’s a chance the game won’t be shown on television locally.

Meanwhile, a behind-the-scenes sellout already has been arranged, and the folks who buy tickets during the 24-hour window help to reduce the size of the pill that a third party ultimately will swallow.

Other items of interest: Kellen Soldier Winslow suspended 1 game for slamming browns upper management. Tom Brady's career in real jeopardy due to post ACL surgery infection(s). Haslett is a good coach. Larry Johnson is still a punk, and Derek Anderson is still the least accurate QB in the NFL.

    Hopefully I didn't miss anything.

Nothing to be sorry about, the past decade has probably beem the worst in the already sad history of the Lions. It's amazing that there was a sellout streak during that period of time. Lions fans get dumped on by the media but there's no denying that they love their team even though it is one of the most pathetic teams in all of pro sports. It kills me to see a team like the Rays who spent the majority of this season in first place struggle to draw attendance. That would never happen in Detroit.

Also I think the other stories you mentioned are much bigger than the Lions failing to sell out a game which you put in the thread title but w/e

i dont know anything about brady, but even though i dont like the pats that would be a shame if his career ended early.

oh and go skins. i am not responsible for my actions if we keep this close like every other god damn game this season. i dont consider squeaking one by in detroit great momentum when we play arguably the best team in the league next week.

I'm surprised the Larry Johnson ordeal isn't bigger than it is. He's been charged four (FOUR!) times for assaulting women. He'll be inactive for the second straight week and is probably looking at a four-game suspension from the league, if not more. He's been a malcontent from the beginning here in KC. Just about everybody saw this coming. Everybody, that is, except the Chiefs' brass, the ones that signed him to a huge contract not too long ago.

It's a pretty sad story. The guy has a severe problem dealing with women. He needs help, and has admitted as much. I hope he gets it. That said, I hope the Chiefs wash their hands and get rid of him. When he's good he's REALLY good, but the excess baggage is just too much...

In other Chiefs news, our three quarterbacks this week are Tyler Thigpen, Ingle Martin, and Quinn Gray. LOL.

He didn't rape these girls. He *allegedly* slapped, punched, and/or spit on all of them (and threatened to beat up boyfriends, threatening to kill at least one of them). [Jim Rome voice] Allegedly [/Jim Rome voice].

I've said some pretty dumb jokes in the past but they're just that, stupid intertron nonsense bullshit jokes, meant to get a rise out of people. Sorry if I offended.

P.S. I know your comment was made in jest. I wanted to come back with something super-witty, another stupid rape joke, but unfortunately this real life stuff is no laughing matter.

I took no offense, I just found your post ironic. But it's good to learn that people who joke about rape online can still be sensitive about violence against women in real life. (Seriously.)

k, back on track. I have no idea how bad Brady's knee is, but you'd think it has to be something pretty serious for it to get this much play in the press?

Hopefully Brady gets better, he IS the best QB in the NFL.
be some very sad shit if his career ends so early.

Infections can be really serious but I think media is just playing it up. Infections tend to go really bad when they are untreated ie a patient complains about pain after surgery doctor just shrugs it off as normal pain. But with Brady they are going to be on top of it and I doubt it will be anything serious.

I agree.. wasn't trying to diss detroit fans. Detroit fans are great.

It is sort of a big deal though because NFL games almost always "sell out", and when they don't, they are given a 24 hr extension by the league and whatever still needs to be sold out is usually bought up by the local TV affiliate.

Believe me though.. Cleveland fans can relate...

    Most likely, you are right.

Look no further than LeCharles Bentley though to how a knee injury and subsequent infection can derail a career.

santonio holmes was pulled over and charged with marijuana possession in Pittsburgh this week

    couple things, probably controversial

    1. How fucking stupid are the Pitt. police department, do you not know who Holmes is? Do you not realize you're playing one of the toughest teams in the league this weekend, let the guy go!

    2. Am I really dumb for thinking this way?

    3. I really really really hate the Steelers

couple things, probably what you should have said

    1. How fucking stupid is Santonio Holmes for being pulled over with marijuana in the car? You're in the NFL and probably have a huge posse you hang with, make one of those fuckers keep it in their car or on their person.

    2. I mean seriously, I've never understood why famous people get busted for drugs or, even worse, get DUI's. You're fucking rich. You're fucking famous. Get somebody to drive your ass around or carry your drugs for you.
    FYP

And yes, thinking the police department should let him go because he's famous, umm, that's a little out there. I know it happens, and I'm all for it, but to be pissed at the police department, when it was Holmes that was the dumbass, is a little far-fetched for me.

Well I'm stuck watching the Lions get pounded by the Skins or the Chiefs vs Jets in non-HD. Thanks CBS.

Edit: nm, CBS just randomly switched it over to HD. It's still Chiefs vs Jets though

Watching the browns offense in goal-line situations is so maddening.

Like, we have a good overall o-line, but it's a not a power run blocking line. We can get a push...... backwards.

Then we have DA who has no touch or accuracy on short passes. And our receivers (i.e. braylon) have a hard enough time catching routine passes, letalone tight passes in coverage.

It really is a bad combination.

I think it's awesome what Mike Singletary, new head coach of the 49ers, did before and after Sunday's game...Here's a link:

I again want to thank Matt Millen for shipping over Shaun Rodgers for a late 3rd round pick and a CB that can't run. The guy is an absolute monster.

Some GM's make one team look a lot better, Matt Millen was a revolutionary, he made 30 teams look a lot better.

I do remember back a few years, Butch Davis was the browns coach (came from Miami U), skins were picking 5 and took sean taylor (miami guy), lions were @6 and browns @7. Everybody knew that Davis wanted one of his guys from the U (Taylor or Winslow), so Botch gives up a high #2 to move up *one spot* to grab Winslow, with R. Williams and D. Hall still on the board. Then the Lions grab Williams @7 who they wanted all along.

    OBTW...

    THE TEXAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNN NNNNNNNSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

Woot Woot. AJ catching everything in sight. Mario making game changing sacks. Schaub poised, confident, and ready to destroy opposing offenses. Owen Daniels providing catches in the redzone. Jacoby Jones *FINALLY* doing what we saw him do so well last preseason.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!

...oh yeah, gg too Titans/Colts. You provided one hell of an entertaining MNF game.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

    HAHAHAAAAAA YAAAAAAAAAAAY FOR HOUUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTONNNNNN!!

(Seriously now, you expected us to go 3-0 for the first time in franchise history, destroy a team 35-6, and not hear about it? Y'all should be happy there aren't like 5 separate threads about this in the commune. haha WEEEEEH)
