Walmart: My annual trip

I've never really liked the place, but every once in a while (read: once a year or so), I'll venture into Walmart. Everybody loves the place, so why not me?

Honestly, how does anyone shop at this dump? The entire place was dirty. The floors of the aises looked like they hadn't been washed in a year. In any given aisle, 2 carts (which were all broken and wouldn't easily go straight-forward without lots of effort) had to be *perfectly* navigated to get through. The place is *MASSIVE*. How does anybody find anything there? There wasn't even a clear cut main aisle like most department stores-- just random shit put absolutely everywhere with the obvious goal of fitting as much crap in one store as possible without any secondary interests such as comfort, organization, or cleanliness.

So here I am walking around this craphole, and people are cutting me off and giving me dirty looks all over the place. Like *EVERYBODY* seemed miserable and completely void of any manners or politeness whatsoever. I also got the feeling that the good looking, well groomed white guy in his early 20's wearing decent clothing and a nice watch didn't get a whole lot of respect.

Anyway, after a while, I notice a couple "urban youth" following me around everywhere. It was ridiculously obvious. Like for 15 minutes straight, I was walking up and down random aisles and whenever I'd peek over my shoulders, these same 2 idiots would ALWAYS be there. When I stopped, they'd pretend to look around for a bit. This wasn't just me being paranoid-- it was blatantly obvious and they either didn't care, or they were complete idiots about it. So I'm walking down one of the rare long aisles in this place, peek over my shoulder and sure enough, there they are. So I swing my cart around and start walking straight at them, with the deadliest, meanest look on my face imaginable. Now I'm usually a pretty nice, friendly guy, but I also have a 'don't fuck with me' side that most people don't see. They scattered into a side aisle, I followed them a bit, then decided that it wasn't worth getting shot or stabbed in the parking lot so I abandoned pursuit. I didn't see them again the rest of the time I was there, which was about a half hour or so.

A couple more people cut me off, I waited in an unimaginably long line, heard some crazy lady yell across the store "my son is over in Iraq fighting for your right to run over my foot and be a complete BITCH about it", and had an unfriendly, rude checkout lady run my shit. She dropped at least 3 things and was completely careless with some fragile stuff I bought as well. I rumbled my broken fucking shopping cart out of there and I'm never going back, promise, as long as I live.


Cliffs notes: Walmart sucks. The extra 10-20% you save there is not worth the risk of immediate death, disease, or famine of going there. If the small amount of money you save is worth it at this time, I recommend becoming smarter, working harder, or simply playing more poker to the point where it is no longer worth it.

It's actually a nice area... a suburb of cleveland called macedonia. It's about 10 miles or so from where I live (also a nice area).

Sounds to me like this is a case of poor management and location than it does about Wal-Mart in general. I like the Wal-Mart here in town (20k pop.). It always has everything I need. It's not dirty or messy and I've never had a problem with anyone in there.

On the other hand, the building and parking lot take up a lot of land... but that's the only downfall I can think of.

In college we'd always go to walmart around 2am, that's the best time, you have the whole place to yourself and security really isn't present.

is Wal-mart like Primark in the UK ?

I went shopping for some holiday clobber, average costs of shorts £30 ($60ish) avg cost of T-shirts £20 ($40ish) in London...however in primark I got 2 pairs of shorts, 5 t-shirts and a straw hat (yeah, thats how I roll) for £26......i know kids in China are working 30hrs a day or whatever......but £26!!!

But just think of the efficiency. There used to be 25 shops around town that it took to service the same needs as one Wal-Mart.
Those 25 shops had to pay rent to a local businessman to sustain their locations, gouge their customers to make enough revenue for health insurance for family employees and to pay them a decent wage allowing them to work extra hours to keep the shops clean, organized, happily staffed. Meanwhile they charged more to support the 25 families that ran those shops so they could spend the profits at the 24 other shops in town.

Wal-Mart can cut out all that waste: they can save money on rent & buy the land, not waste money on advertising locally, manage all this from afar so you don't have to pay locals as much & use their economies of scale to cut margins for all their vendors & regional service providers. They can also squeeze the last bit of pride out of their employees, surrounding areas & even customers.

Definitely a fair trade off for cheap stuff and a liberal return policy.

And while we're making fun of Lukie:

I couldn't agree more. The way I feel towards this specific subject is the same way I feel about building new highways to compensate for the bottlenecking we have going on here in Ontario and throughout other highly populated areas: one day production needs to cease to exist.

I did the exact same thing, but I also went there at 2am to look at all of the absolute loonies that would be crawling around that place (either buying things or stocking the shelves)....
