My take on the matter is this. Guys who are gay have parts of their brain, the attraction part but usually more than that, of a female. That's why you can often spot a gay person by their behavior. Straight guys who look up to another guy, who find that person cool, that is an evolutionary mental mechanism that makes us want to emulate other examplary males. We take on their mannerisms, and usually more, such as their way of dressing, interests, and so on. Women do the same with females they look up to. It has nothing to do with being gay, it has everything to do with being equipped with a brain that has to ensure we fit in in social life.

Being able to follow society's norms and fads is the primary way us human beings show we have a fully working brain. Others are being able to excel at some arts and crafts or sports (singers, athletes). Our brain is the most complex organ we have, and as such the best way to show our genetic purity and superiority. Our peacock's feathers that serve as a heuristic to peak into our genes which cannot be observed directly.

That is why being gay and in denial, or hiding it, must be so excruciating. You're attracted to males (because of their male features) but at the same time you follow society's rolemodels on how to be a man that is attracted to females.
