Did you see all that senseless rape-violence in the Land of the Enduring Sun? Seriously, they shot one girl in the face for wanting an education in Pakistan, and a loose hundred random dudes centuple raped some poor girl to death on a bus in India somewhere.

Yeah, that stuff disgusts me too Rilla. But this is in our own backyard, and it's been blatantly covered up, for the sake of... the ongoing success of the high school football team?...

In India there is a tremendous backlash and outrage. There are literally lynch mobs. In lolislamistan they at least have the slightly less pitiful excuse of religious brainwashing to justify their abhorrent treatment of women. In Steubenville, Ohio, their reason for excusing these despicable cats?... A cult of celebrity surrounding their high school football team. I am disgusted by the actions of Adam Lanza, but I have pity for him. But these people? Especially the adults who in my opinion are just as, if not more responsible, and should be held equally accountable for the rape(s?)-- when confronted with people like this, I almost wish I was a faithful Christian, so I could at least find solace in the belief that they will burn in hell for all of eternity.

Training to fight does equal self defense. Self defense for this girl would have been to avoid these yahoos at all costs especially if/since she was drugged. In a small town you know who to avoid. Expecting a sociopath not to act like sociopath is like asking the sun not to shine in the morning.

5. If you ever lose track of it or somebody else handles it, leave it.
6.Learn to recognize when tensions are increasing; learn to de-escalate and leave. In my experience most men and women are horrible at de-escalating. We ape up, alway try to get the last word in, we think our bodies are sacrocint etc... Cool head wins and gets to go home. Ape up on real predator and you won't get to go home

Bottom of any list is self defense fighting skills. Physical confrontations are dangerous. At best 50/50, often odds are stacked against you

But in all seriousness and only slightly off topic, my daughters are taking up some form of martial arts at the age of 4 or 5 and will be forced/bribed with gifts or w/e to continue it until at least the age of 15.

I'm pretty sure if you compare the percentage of women in the world without a black belt in some form of martial art who got raped with the same percentage of those with a black belt, you'll find bad ass fighting bitches are far less likely to get raped.

I have no evidence to back this up, but my sister is a black belt in Karate and once got jumped by a gang of 6 people, 4 guys and 2 girls, and beat living fuck out of all of them in the space of less than a minute. Would love to have seen that pan out.

I think martial arts are a great sport and a good activity for both boys and girls alike. However, I think that it is disturbing that you feel the need to dedicate so much of their youth to such an endeavor. Maybe, after joining the science club, your little girls could grow up to be the next Nobel Prize winner, but instead they'll be really really good rape deflectors. I'm not disturbed by you, but by the fact that, living in our society, you feel the need to push them in this direction.

Again, I don't think you'd be wrong to have your girls take some self defense classes, but we need to be very careful to keep our focus on the fact that it is not the victims responsibility.

I completely agree. I want my girls involved in other activities as well, but martial arts are great for confidence as well as self defence.

It's not just that I feel our society leaves me wanting to know my kids can defend themselves, it's also so I feel confident they'll have an added measure of safety if/when they go travelling or for nights out. I just don't see a downside and I see a massive upside.

Victims are typically not at fault for the vast majority of violent crimes, but I alone can't change society, its views or the number of violent criminals out there, but I can very easily reduce the odds of my children being victims via encouraging expertise in self defence whilst not impeding on their freedom (ie don't go out at night, or don't travel to dangerous countries etc).

Oh don't do that. The Pakistanis were made equally aware of that poor girl's fate and some were verbose in their shock. But still, medical workers are being shot dead for giving polio vaccinations in that country of ~176,000,000. That's a lot of people, some are tribal, but I'm sure some have the internet, are secular, educated to an end, and irritated with the lay of the land.
