Default Slut walk

SlutWalk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In short: some police guy in Toronto says that girls should avoid dressing like sluts to avoid getting sexually harrassed or raped, in protest thousands of women take to the streets, many dressed in everyday wear, some in more "slutty" attire.

Just had a brief discussion with my gf who despite being feminist in certain respects took a stance that I didn't expect her to take. Interested in hearing your thoughts...

If I was single I'd be out there with them, accusing them of not really being sluts and daring them to prove otherwise.

My deductive reasoning concludes that there is obviously a female population group that wants to be sexually harassed. And if its fine with them then its fine with me.

Actual comment though is this. The logic that women shouldn't dress provocatively to avoid being raped is solid in the same sense that in the 80s common wisdom was don't drive at night when all the drunks are driving to avoid getting into an accident. But the narrative changed for the latter to focus on people not drunk driving in the first place. So don't rape people.

haha yeah more or less the same I got from mine. Imo, of course we want to live in a society where rape is unacceptable, but at the same time, women have to do a bit of risk assessment and say, "if I dress like a whore, I can expect to be treated like one, and therefore I have to accept the risks involved therein." I believe that's simply what the cop was trying to say... Just like cops tell you not to flash your iphone wearing expensive clothes in the poorest neighbourhoods. Of course it's not right to mug people but people who get mugged are often also "asking for it".

Thats a bad comparison. There is no neighborhood where you cannot get raped (because erection, unlike poorness is not limited to poor hoods), so sluts shouldn't dress like sluts anywhere, otherwise, "they are asking for it"

Please don't get me started. Dressing like a slut and being treated like a slut has NOTHING to do with rape. Now if women dressed like they wanted to be raped (if that was possible), that would be a little different, but still not as different as you'd think. This is because rape is a deeply sociopathic problem. Sometimes the lines are not so clear with things like date and statutory, but there is virtually no activity on the planet a woman could do that is responsible for her own violent rape. You could use the exact same argument the fuckface cop used to protect child molestation. The reality is the perp is coming from a position of similarly fucked psychological problems in both scenarios

I'd also like to mention that the argument "she made me do it" is straight out of places like Saudi Arabia, where women are treated worse than most animals. If she gets raped, she gets punished because the man just says that she accidentally didn't cover her ankle and he saw her skin and became overwhelmed with lust and it was clearly all her fault because she should have known better than to be a nympho whore who flashes her ankle so she gets twenty lashes while the man is respected for doing what was right

Is their any actual data that links choice of clothing and statistical chance of getting raped?

Well that wazs simple to answer:

Through a Rapist’s Eyes?

Extract:
The most common outfit of rape victims is jeans and a t-shirt or sweatshirt. It is true that some articles of clothing are easier to remove than others, but there is no data to suggest that a potential victim is at greater risk because of how she is dressed. Remember, 70-80% of assailants are known to their victim, so tactics of stranger rapists aren’t needed.

There is a great chance to get raped in a dress or a mini skirt, not so big if you are wearing a mascot costume, those are bitch to take off.

You won't find any statistical significance about anything related to sexiness with regards to rape because rape has nothing to do with sexiness. People are confused because they equivocate sex with sexy, and they don't even understand the motivations of rapists

Highly situationally dependent.

How far apart do the words "don't" and "stop" have to be before its considered rape?

Probably much wider then anus from vagina.

For real now, in my country, sexual contact is not necessary for woman (or man ) to be considered raped.

see, this is why I posted it, I wanted to understand the background behind the outrage, stats linking rape victims with how they're dressed etc. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Most of rapists are driven with stuff like power and domination, weakness and helplessness of their victims turns them on. I suppose, in case of serial rapist, the one that chooses a victim based on certain characteristics (for example picks girls that look like his mum ) there is a slight chance that he may choose them by the way they dress, but mostly he picks on physical characteristics, like hair color, age, etc.

So, if you dress like a slut, the thing you can fear most on the streets is being verbally raped by couple of drunk jocks chilling out and throwing their football around.

Wuf has it right - there is just no link between the way someone is dressed and the word no.

The debate over here in the Uk at the moment is the anonimity(sp?) of people accused of rape and the 'cry rape' thing.

personally it should be innocent until proven guilty and i agree that accused rapists - until guilty - should keep aninimoty due to what is clearly an immotive subject.

But saying that who hasnt been out and seen some woman so plastered (the same applies to guys ofc) that if someone took her home for sex - would she even know??

from a perspective over her, the issue is all the drinking that takes place, more than anything else

Yeah the drunken example is a good example of the grey area of what is considered rape and what's not. If somebody were to take her home knowing that she's easier to get into bed, she's clearly being taken advantage of, but is it rape? Is it rape only when somebody were to slip something into her drink intentionally with the intent of raping?

Grey areas? I think law is pretty clear of this: if sex is not consensual or a person (victim) is unable to defend themselves, the act is considered a rape. So if she is drunk, but standing on two feet and can clearly pronounce:"I wanna have sex", then its not a rape. If she is drunk, mumbles and you have to carry her somewhere to have sex with her, then its a rape. The fact that she probably wont remember anything next morning doesn't make an act not being a rape.

My ex boss, a well known guy, regularly in the local and national media is currently on trial for rape. He nailed an employee at the xmas party, she says she was too drunk, was taken advantage of and would never have done it otherwise. He claims buyers remorse.

The CCTV of her unable to walk and being carried bact to the hotel half hour before is what seems to be killing his case.

Back to OP... while rape is never a result or acceptable in any means... on one hand, if you dress like a slut, I'll oogle you like you're a slut. Fair game... but Rape is not acceptable.

Case in point... if I want you to stare at my testicles, I'll walk around with them hanging out... just like your tits.

I read the Wikipedia article attached in the OP and discovered what is now my favorite sentence I've ever read in the English language:
I have a perfect right to leave my windows open when I nip to the shops for some fags, without being burgled.
