In search for the Nokia 3310

So every couple of years I bore myself to tears in search for a new mobile network. So I thought I'd take a page out of my sisters book who, being smarter than me, has figured out a way that her provider pays her - and we're not even in soviet russia.

So I'm going to put a free data card in my smartphone and get a second phone with a cheapo provider. As this is by far the cheapest way of getting data+mobile network... talking about 90% less than the cheapest combined plan.



Now, I'm about as up to date on cellphone technology as Steve Jobs is on being alive. I'm looking for something that is cheap and has ridiculous battery life. I remember my old Nokia 3310, back when I had a social live, would last for weeks even though I was using it constantly. I don't know if any new phones do that for you, and I don't know if it's wise to ebay a 15 year old phone today.
Nokia seems to still be in the market with the Nokia 100 - it has a color display which seems a bit over the top, but it does come in pink which is a plus! But that's as far as I got.

Battery technology has improved greatly in recent years so any modern $5 non smart phone should get great battery life.

Close. She has an ancient prepaid plan where she pays 30c on outgoing calls and gets 10c for every minute she gets an incoming call. Then she has a second phone with a 1000-minute/month flatrate, so she calls her other phone at night to charge up that account. And once in a while she uses that phone to call a friends value-added number to get the money out of that account.

I think that's the one they re-named 'nokia 100' - I got the dual-sim version for €20. Has a flashlight and also doubles as a hammer.
I wish I could put a custom rom on my htc that would allow me to disable all connetions on standby since I'm not going to use it as a phone anymore, but htc has done an amazing job at locking this thing down. So if anyone's in the market for an android phone: make sure its easily hackable or wait for ubuntu phones. You never know what you wanna do with it in a couple years time.

In hindsight I may not have wanted to pick the phone that nokia designed for the ethiopian market. One nodge up wouldn't have hurt, but whatevers, it works.
